ANALYSIS: Alvaro Morata. Is this the right £70m man for Mourinho?

After a disappointing first season in the EPL for Mourinho’s side, Spanish striker Alvaro Morata could be the solution to their problems with Zlatan Ibrahimovich being released and Antoine Griezmann looking increasingly likely not to join the Mancunian outfit.

Through his time at Juventus, Morata netted over 25 times helping his team win the Serie A and Coppa Italia both years in his Seria A spell. Some of these were crucial goals such as his winner against Inter Milan in the Coppa Italia final back in 2016, also scoring home and away against Madrid in Champions League semi-final:  Morata is certainly a young player but a proven prospect that can score consistently in the top-tier of European football.

Morata as a player has a fantastic combination of technique and athleticism this making him a threat in most situations on the pitch. He has been described as a versatile player and is able to lead the attack in a team, but also work in partnership with another player. His goal scoring range has been shown with goals scored inside and outside the box using his head and both left and right foot making him the complete striker.

It was Mourinho who gave Morata his debut back in 2010/11 season, showing he trusts his abilities on the pitch. Mourinho helped develop him during his early days at Los Blancos as he played him out on the wing, this was where he played in his first El Clasico. He is a perfect fit for Mourinho as he is a manger that takes pride being able to perform in the big games and Morata has proven this time and time again.

This would only be the Red Devils second signing of the summer after signing Victor Lindelof from Benfica for around £30 million. This has been a frustrating time for the fans, with Man United being linked to a number of players like Ivan Perisic, James Rodriguez and Romelu Lukaku.

With Mourinho causing speculation at the end of March going to watch Ukraine vs Croatia this pointing toward a Perisic move. The asking price for Morata is to be said around the £72 million mark which would make him United’s second most expensive signing ever, behind last season’s transfer of Paul Pogba for £89 million.

Mourinho is reportedly furious with the lack of transfers targets Ed Woodward has been able to attract to the club and it has been said Mourinho wants this deal finalised by Thursday. With United traveling to America on Sunday for their pre-season tour the deal needs to be done sooner rather than later to satisfy the expectations of Manchester’s supposed ‘special one’.
