Christian Eriksen: Real Madrid preparing bid for Danish international

Unlike many of his teammates at Tottenham, Christian Eriksen is yet to put pen to paper on a new contract with the Lillywhites.

Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Heung-Min Son have all signed new deals in recent months, but Eriksen has held out and now has just 18 months left on his current deal.

According to Madrid-based Radio station Cadena Cope, that’s put Real on alert as they look to find a replacement for the ageing Luka Modric.

It seems Eriksen would fit the bill perfectly. With over 50 league assists since joining Spurs, the Dane is the type of creative maestro Los Blancos need to once again be competitive after what has been a disappointing start to the season.

Yet talk of a £40million bid would surely see Daniel Levy laugh his Madrid counterparts out of the boardroom. Well known as a shrewd negotiator, Levy will not be keen to sell Eriksen at all, but a bid at around the £80 million mark may just convince him to let the Danish international go.

However, Real will not be the only club interested. The likes of Barcelona, PSG and Bayern Munich have all expressed a desire to bring Eriksen to their respective sides over recent seasons. Any indication that Eriksen isn’t planning to renew his contract at Spurs would surely result in a scramble for his signature from most, if not all, of Europe’s top clubs this summer, and no doubt Levy would use that interest to stir up a bidding war.

For their part, Spurs are very keen to tie the Denmark captain down to a new deal — both to secure his future in North London and failing that, add a few million pounds to any transfer offers should suitors come calling.

Despite the interest, Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino believes Eriksen will sign and commit his future to the Tottenham project that the Argentine has so expertly built over the last few years.

Speaking during a press conference, Pochettino made clear he sees Eriksen as a key figure for Spurs:

“We are working so hard. The club is trying to take the best decision. Christian will take the best decision.

“I am not worried but I prefer he is going to sign a new contract and stay a long time with Tottenham.”

For Spurs fans, they’d like to see that happen sooner rather than later. The longer the uncertainty around him remains, the more concerned they may be that Eriksen’s head has been turned.

One thing’s for sure, were the Dane ever to depart from North London, the creative gap he’d leave would be a supremely difficult one to fill.
