FPL: Five of the best captaincy options for GW8

Josh (@whatthebiggsee on Twitter) takes us through five of the best captaincy options for GW5 in FPL.

The Obvious One

Harry Kane vs Cardiff (H)

This one seems so obvious that if I picked anyone else for this slot I think I would be lying to you. Harry Kane against a newly promoted side who are struggling hugely seems too good to be true. The Englishman hasn’t had his most fantastic season so far but coming back into form with three goals in his last two games he is expected to rip Cardiff to shreds. With only 28.8% ownership he could also give you a huge rank boost if he provides a few goals.

He is shooting less this year but has still registered 5 goals from 20 shots. Add to that the fact that he is on penalties and it seems that he will be a sure thing to grab you points. It feels crazy not to have him and many will be scrambling to get him in, why not join in and back the man who breathes funny but scores shedloads of goals.

The Fun One

Eden Hazard vs Southampton (A)

Southampton are not a bad team, they aren’t a good team either. They are very much a Mark Hughes team in that they are average. Bit up bit down but for the most part they’re fine. Chelsea on the other hand look great this season under Sarri and nobody is enjoying life under the Italian more than Eden Hazard.

Top goal scorer in the league, with 6, he looks as good as a couple of ex Chelsea managers said he was. His form is amazing, managing returns in every game except the 0-0 draw with West Ham and that was mostly due to an outstanding Fabianski performance.  He seems to be having fun too which means he’s great fun to watch and for the purposes of this piece, he will hopefully be fun to captain.

The Decent One

Romelu Lukaku vs Newcastle (H)

Manchester United are not a bad team, they aren’t a good team either. They are very much a Mourinho third season team in that they are a bit of a mess. Jose could be on the ropes or about to make a triumphant come back. Either way he will say something confusing the press. All of that aside Big Rom will most likely play up front. Mou likes him and plays him literally all the time. He doesn’t always get the service he should and sometimes is just bad but he’s always got that goal scoring potential.

Newcastle are similarly suffering either from lack of spending or lack of spending. It’s very unclear. This may actually turn out to be the most boring match ever or both teams could see weakness in the other and go for the kill. I’m hoping for the latter and with Lukaku being United’s best outlet he will hopefully be in the goals. A decent pick if ever there was one.

The Unlikely One

Joe Hart vs Huddersfield (H)

Captaining a keeper is boring. That’s just the truth. There’s a reason nobody recommends it, it can be very hard to get right. However if you for some reason really wanted to captain a keeper, then Joe Hart against the team that has scored the least goals in the league would be a good shout.

He has made 35 saves this season, which is the most. Burnley keepers are often good for a save point and Joe Hart looks back to his best under Dyche. Huddersfield also don’t look super threatening but have been shooting, 58 shots to be precise. With the way burnley set up Hart could very well get a clean sheet and some save points to go with it. Not the first choice for many but not a bad call.

The Differential One

Anthony Knockaert vs West Ham (H)

Knockheart was touted to be an exciting talent coming to the premier league after Brighton’s promotion campaign. He never quite lived up to that hype. He seems to have stepped up this year with returns every other game. 27 points so far isn’t brilliant but for 5.5 it’s actually pretty good.

Against a leaky West Ham side, who have improved in recent games, he might see a chance to reward his low number of owners. 1.2% of managers have him in their team meaning any returns make you look like a genius who knows things we all wish we did. A touch risky but I can assure you that not many will be captaining him.
