AFC Bournemouth seal deal for promising Welsh centre-back

AFC Bournemouth have completed the signing of Chris Mepham from Brentford for a reported £12m, according to Sky Sports.

The 21-year old defender becomes Howe’s 3rd addition this window alongside Nathaniel Clyne and Dominic Solanke from Liverpool.

Mepham’s move to AFC Bournemouth caps an impressive few years for the youngster. His career started in Chelsea’s youth ranks before he made the move to Brentford’s B team, before eventually graduating to the front squad and making 43 appearances since 2016.  He also made his first Wales appearance in 2018 against China as a substitute and has since played three more times for the national side.

Eddie Howe has spoken of his delight at finally signing the young defender after a failed summer bid, stating that the player has “huge potential” and will be a great asset to the Cherries.

Mepham himself has been quick to give credit to Eddie Howe’s work as the reason for his move, saying it is an exciting prospect to be working under a manager like Howe.

Whether Mepham will be thrown straight into the first team is unknown given the preferred partnership of Ake and Steve Cook currently, but it may be that the Welshman is seen as the long-term replacement for Cook in the heart of the Cherries’ defence.
