Ross Barkley: where is Everton’s prestigious talent off to next?

Ross Barkley has expressed his desire to leave Everton to manager Ronald Koeman. In an Everton press conference ahead of their Europa League qualification clash at Goodison Park against Ruzomberok, Koeman clarified the clubs ongoing situation with the player.

“We made a really good offer to sign a new contract, he declined that contract and told me he’s looking for a new challenge.”

The Toffee’s manager also said that he “100 percent” expects to lose the England International playmaker before the end of the transfer window, yet made it clear the club have received no offers. With Spurs reportedly monitoring the situation it is likely that Mario Pocchetino will look to make a bid. However, they will have to meet Everton’s £40m pound contract.

Spurs will most likely need a stronger squad to cope with the larger fixture list that Champions League football brings but will Barkley manage to force his way into a Spurs’ starting line up. With the likes of Christian Eriksen and Dell Alli, it is difficult to envisage where he will fit into Tottenham’s attacking set up.

What now for Ross?

Barkley will be a significant loss for Everton as he has created the most chance and been top of the assist list since the 2014/15 season. This style of playmaker will be missed in any squad. However, Everton will hope Klaasen will be able to replace Barkley whilst Everton are also seeking the signature of Gylfi Sigurdsson.

With Barkley set to miss the start of the season with a groin injury, wherever Barkley goes, he will have to work his way into a squad. Tottenham appear to be the only team that finished above Everton last season interested in the player. Therefore it may be a question of joining a team below Everton in terms of last season’s table standings.
