Arsenal look to beat Chelsea in signing Cengiz Under from Roma

Reports from Sky Sports and the Daily Mirror suggest Arsenal are favourites to land Cengiz Under from AS Roma. The tricky and pacey attacking midfielder has caught the eye of Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund however it is Arsenal who have had a £55 million move rejected from Roma.

Under’s fine form in both Serie A and the Champions League has caused rumours to mount in the lead up to the January transfer window but reports so far have suggested that only Arsenal have submitted any serious transfer request. An original transfer fee of £29 million was supposedly rejected by Roma in December from Arsenal and if the Gunners want to sign the versatile Turkish star, they would have to break their record transfer fee; a record which was broken merely one year ago in the signing of Aubaemyang.

Under, the Turkish trickster, has scored six and assisted eight in 23 appearances so far this season. Although many associate his game with tricks he has scored a large proportion of his goals from outside the box and has become a fan favourite in the process. Having only arrived in Italy in 2017, he has quickly made his mark despite having never lived abroad before.

His rapid rise to becoming one of Europe’s most exciting youngsters is a credit to his attitude at such a young age and this is something Unai Emery and many clubs across Europe are surely looking for in the January transfer window. With Aaron Ramsey’s departure looking almost certain, Cengiz Under seems to be a good fit at the Emirates.

Arsenal have had a positive season so far considering the tough task Emery has had in a post-Wenger era. However, they are falling seriously short of any title challenge and Emery will be looking to this January window and next summer to build his squad to challenge the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City. Signing Under for a record transfer fee would be a huge statement of intent and would be an excellent replacement to Ramsey.
