Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United all chasing Paul Mitchell to become their new sporting director

Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United are set for a three-way fight to lure RB Leipzig’s head of recruitment Paul Mitchell to become their new sporting director, according to reports from Sky Sports.

Mitchell himself has had previous stints in the England at Southampton and Tottenham yet Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United may be forced to go elsewhere as Mitchell has an option of signing a new lucrative deal, keeping him at Leipzig until 2025.

Mitchell, 38, from the Denton suburb of Manchester has been credited with realising the potential of players including Sadio Mane, Dusan Tadic and Graziano Pelle at Southampton whilst unearthing Toby Alderweireld, Dele Alli and Kieran Trippier at Spurs.

Julian Nagelsmann will take over from Ralf Rangnick at Leipzig this summer and the former has made it clear that keeping Mitchell on board is a priority for himself and the club. It is understood that Mitchell is also receiving attention from Schalke and Borussia Mochengladbach who will fight those tempting to win Mitchell over.

The Gunners are presently recruiting a replacement for Sven Mislintat who has recently departed the Emirates whilst Chelsea are yet to replace Michael Emenalo, who left the club in November 2017.

Old Trafford have confirmed they hope to appoint a technical director before the start of next season and it is understood Mitchell is one of their main targets. Mitchell has spent around £35m on assests at Leipzig including Tyler Adams and Nordi Mukiele; his recruitments would now sell for more than double the initial investment, highlighting Mitchell’s talent to spot players.

Mitchell enjoyed playing spells in England at Wigan, Milton Keynes and Swindon Town and first became ‘Head of Recruitment’ at Milton Keynes Dons when Karl Robinson, the then manager of Milton Keynes, recognised Mitchell’s ability both on and off the pitch. He then joined Southampton in 2012 before heading to Tottenham in November 2014.
