Chelsea and Man United to battle with Real Madrid for Icardi

There is no doubt Mauro Icardi is lighting up Serie A this year with 10 goals and 2 assists in 15 appearances so far, but this has made the Inter Milan striker a hot target for many European clubs. Reports from Talksport and the Daily Mail have stated that Chelsea and Manchester United will have to battle Real Madrid to secure the signature of the 25-year old Argentine.

The transfer has been previously doubted by many as Icardi, the team captain, stated he is happy at Inter even though he is currently besieged by rumours linking him elsewhere. Nevertheless, transfer rumours have been reignited amid reports suggesting Inter Milan will be receiving UEFA sanctions for breaching Financial Fair Play Regulations.

The news of financial trouble will no doubt be rapidly spread round European clubs, yet Manchester United, Chelsea, and Real Madrid all seem to be the front-runners presumably due to their respective strikers all under-performing so far this season. However, the transfer is further complicated by Icardi’s ~£90 million release clause.

Chelsea are no strangers to breaking their record transfer fee having broken it twice in consecutive seasons signing Álvaro Morata and Kepa Arrizabalaga. On the other hand, United have spent significantly less recently and reports regarding increased friction between Jose Mourinho and Ed Woodward over a lack of summer signings suggest a big January signing may be inbound to Old Trafford. After all, it is United who are currently 7th in the Premier League after a 0-0 draw at home to a struggling Crystal Palace this past weekend.

Yet, Real Madrid sit 6th in La Liga after losing 3-0 to Eibar away this weekend and will also be very interested in the news that Icardi could be tempted away from the San Siro. It seems very likely that other underperforming clubs like Bayern Munich will also be keeping a close eye on the situation at Inter but it is evident that there is tough competition to sign the prolific Argentine as the transfer rumours continue to heat up in the fast approach to the January transfer window.
