Daniel Farke may have found the Canaries’ solution to Premier League survival – opinion

Norwich City overcame stiff Championship opposition in the form of Preston North End to progress to the fourth round of the FA Cup with a 4-2 win. The encounter provided a welcome distraction from a gruelling Premier League relegation battle, and one of the highlights of the victory was the emergence of yet another prestigious talent for the Canaries.

Adam Idah scored a hattrick on his FA Cup debut to ensure Daniel Farke’s side got the win they needed to secure their place in the draw whilst exhibiting a sensational individual performance to send a timely reminder to his manager of his explosive and unquestionable potential.

The Irish U19 has been in outstanding form for his both the youth sides of his club and country, scoring 17 in 29 appearances for Ireland and finding the back of the net in every U23 Premier League match for Norwich this season. Idah had not previously provided a goal or an assist in his two first-team appearances for the Canaries before this weekend. But the teenager made it clear to see why Norwich gave him a contract extension over the summer with a flurry of goals to see off the Championship’s tenth-placed side.

His first senior start could not have gone better, and Idah described the performance as “everything you want growing up”. But with the Canaries struggling to bury the host of chances they create, the 18-year-old could be getting his first Premier League start soon. So far only Teemu Pukki and Todd Cantwell have scored more than a single Premier League goal for Farke’s side this season, despite Norwich City sitting 15th in the division for big chances created.

Some of Idah’s youthful vigour could be the perfect complement to the Canaries attack when Pukki fails to make an impact up front. The Premier League’s bottom side need to find a way of escaping the foot of the table, and the academy graduate may be precisely what is required to boost their lowly league goals tally of 22, the fifth-lowest in the division.

Norwich City’s first FA Cup win since 2013 could provide the spark to ignite a relegation revival, but either way, Idah has proven after one game that if the club return to the Championship they will be prepared up top.
