“Embarrassing” – Jermaine Jenas makes considerable claim regarding Aston Villa talisman Jack Grealish

Jermaine Jenas made a bold claim on Match of the Day 2 regarding Jack Grealish when analysing Aston Villa’s defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, which has sent a message to England manager Gareth Southgate for England’s upcoming friendlies against Italy and Denmark.

The midfielder has been in inspired form of late scoring three as well as assisting three in his last ten appearances for Dean Smith’s side. However, the 24-year-old is yet to represent the Three Lions at senior level, having featured seven times for the U21 team after he switched allegiances from the Republic of Ireland.

What did he say?

When asked on Match of the Day 2 if he would have Grealish in the England squad, Jenas replied: “He’s got to be. It has got to that point now where it is actually embarrassing if he’s not in the squad.

“You know we are talking about [Mason] Mount, [James] Maddison, Dele Alli and he’s the best of the bunch right now. As we’re speaking today, he’s in the best form of them all,” added the former Villa man and 21 cap England international.

Evidence for Grealish’s selection is irrefutable

Grealish has been in emphatic form of late and has neigh on single-handedly shouldered the burden of Aston Villa’s relegation battle as both their top scorer, seven, and assist maker having provided for teammates six times. Jenas compared the midfielder to Maddison, Mount and Alli, all of whom have a lower combined total of goals and assists – nine, nine and ten respectively – although they have all featured for England, with Maddison and Mount making their debuts this season.

Part of the issue for England boss Gareth Southgate could be that Grealish has tended to start in a wide left position for Villa and drift inside, but Southgate has tended to deploy much faster players such as Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho in that role.

Based on his consistently impressive performances this season, the Three Lions manager must find a way to include the playmaker in the squad. No other Premier League midfielder has scored more goals than the 24-year-old’s seven this term, and his contribution from the engine room could be valuable to the England team if Southgate can find a way to fit Grealish into his setup.
