Everton 1 Manchester City 3 – Premier League Match Report

Manchester City can win the Premier League at the Etihad next Saturday after sweeping Everton aside 3-1.

Leroy Sane, Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling all notched before half time, and though Yannick Bolasie reduced the deficit after a defensive lapse, City were imperious and merited the margin of victory.

Everton toiled throughout, and went close in the first half through Bolasie and Leighton Baines, but were largely chasing shadows as City ended with 82% possession.

Everton stay ninth while City move 16 points clear of second place Manchester United again. Both teams are next in action against Liverpool, with a giant Champions League quarter-final clash preceding the Merseyside derby next Saturday.

Everton made two changes from their last league fixture at Stoke, Morgan Schneiderlin and Dominic Calvert-Lewin replacing Idrissa Gueye and Tom Davies.

City made only one change, Aymeric Laporte replacing Oleksandr Zinchenko at left back, in a tactical switch by Pep Guardiola.

The adjustment proved effective immediately as the Citizens made a lightning start, Leroy Sane exhibiting exemplary technique to smash home a volley after only four minutes.

Bolasie missed a gilt-edged headed chance not long after, and Gabriel Jesus made the Congolese wideman pay moments later, heading home Kevin De Bruyne’s cross.

Sterling capped off another team move just before the break and City were largely untroubled in the second half, despite a brief resurgence from the Toffees following Bolasie’s long-range strike.

It was one of the best performances of the season from Guardiola’s men, and will surely fill fans with confidence ahead of their Champions League quarter-final first leg against Liverpool.

Everton will take solace in the fact that they managed to score, and know that they are not the first team to have been completely outclassed by City this season.

Both teams face their local rivals next Saturday and if Manchester City are victorious, they will move 19 points clear with only six fixtures remaining, giving them their third Premier League title.
