Everton’s £28.8m-rated man’s career appears to already be over – opinion

When Juventus starlet Moise Kean arrived at Everton over the summer he became the most prominent teenager striker at the club since Wayne Rooney burst onto the scene. The 19-year-old had starred for the Old Lady and Italy during the latter stages of the 2018/19 season, scoring six goals in just five Serie A starts. It was reported that to lure the Italian international to Goodison Park, Marcel Brands told Kean’s mother “we will look after your son”, but that could scarcely be further from what happened on Sunday.

With the scores tied at one apiece against Manchester United, caretaker Everton manager Duncan Ferguson introduced Kean to proceedings in search of a winner. Though 18 minutes later it was the Italian’s number up on the substitutes board and he was removed from the game without so much as a look from his manager. The player appeared dejected as he trudged back off the field, and it is easy to understand why. Ferguson said it was purely to “kill time”, but it already feels like the end of Kean’s stay on Merseyside.

The teenager is yet to find the back of the net, and his treatment at the weekend will not have done his confidence any favours. Kean is currently taking on fewer shots than last season, as well as playing less key passes. Having already been dropped earlier in the campaign for disciplinary breaches, Kean’s, valued at £28.8m (Transfermarkt), stock has plummeted in value just a year since his meteoric rise to prominence.

Everton may yet hope they can turn the situation around, after all the striker is one of their most valuable assets, as the teenager’s resale value would be amongst the highest in their squad. The potential he displayed in Italy is indisputable, and the Toffees may think the relationship with Kean is salvageable, especially with Ferguson ruling himself out from becoming the club’s permanent manager.

Whoever comes in may face a tough ask to keep Kean on Merseyside, but if they are able to convince the teenager, it will be worth it. He is an excellent asset to the club both financially and, in theory, on the field. Everton need a man in charge who can unlock the striker’s potential because currently, his career with the club appears beyond repair.
