FEATURE: Manager of the Week – David Wagner.

After a long summer, the Premier League kicking off last weekend filled a void in many a football fans heart.

You’ll be hard pressed to find a better situation for the old saying – expect the unexpected – than in modern day football, particularly the opening day of the Premier League season. With some surprising outcomes across the fixtures, it was an outstanding beginning to the 2017/18 season to come.

One team perfectly fitting this notion at the weekend were Huddersfield Town. Having never previously made an appearance in the Premier League, football fans across the board were not expecting much from the Terriers.

Fans of the club would be dreaming of survival, hoping they could enjoy Premier League football at the Kirklees stadium for at least one more year. Although it’s far too early to be calling anything for the end of the season just yet, Huddersfield’s resounding win over Palace could be igniting a light of hope amongst fans.

Wagner, who took over back in 2015, will be hoping to engineer a solid season for the Terries in their debut top flight season. Whether its avoiding relegation or maybe something a bit extra, David Wagner will be orchestrating the outfit, to ensure it’s a debut season to remember.

When he first arrived at the club, Huddersfield only just survived Championship relegation. Even fans weren’t expecting much the following term, but following a fair few signings in the summer from the manager, it became a dream season. David, with the likes of Löwe and Kachunga, finished an impressive 5th in the table, getting promoted via the ever-exciting play-offs.

In his first full season for the club, the German had pulled off an unbelievable feat. Having gained entry to arguably the world’s best league, he had opened new doors for Huddersfield Town, encompassing the players, fans, staff and of course the manager himself. He got off to a great start, beating Crystal Palace 3-0 on their own turf.

A new signing he’d brought in over the summer, Steve Mounie, bagged himself a brace. With the manager’s national background, the players celebrated in a German style, linking arms and cheering with the crowd, as has also been seen with Klopp’s Liverpool.

It may be short lived, but fans will take great pride this week as their side sit delightfully at the top of the pecking order after game week 1. Whilst Wagner’s expertise may not emulate Leicester’s surreal season (but as they proved, anything is possible), he is more than capable of managing Premier League survival in his and the clubs first taste of top flight football.
