Former Premier League player makes bold claim regarding £31.5m-rated Aston Villa playmaker

Former Premier League player and son of Steve, Alex Bruce, has made a bold claim regarding Aston Villa talisman Jack Grealish. The midfielder has been in inspired form this season, and his heroic efforts from his hometown club have guided them to 17th in the Premier League, one place and one point above the drop with 11 games of the season remaining. His eye-catching performances have mooted calls that the 24-year-old should receive his first England call up, and those cries have only gotten louder as the season has progressed.

What did he say?

Speaking to Football Insider, Bruce said: “In my opinion, he is the best player in the Premier League at the minute, that’s how highly I rate him.”

The former Hull City centre back added: “I think he’s an exceptional player and he’s obviously getting the accolades. Pep Guardiola has come out and backed me up with that comment, so that’s how important he is to Villa. He creates goals, he scores the goals, he’s been exceptional for them this season.”

Aston Villa’s attacking lynchpin

Bruce is correct to laud the Englishman for his attacking prowess, as per WhoScored, no Aston Villa player has scored more Premier League goals than Grealish’s seven, while he is also their top assist provider with six. On Kevin De Bruyne has found the back of the net more frequently from midfield this season in the top-flight, eight, and in total Grealish has had a hand in 38 per cent of Aston Villa’s 34 goals this term. It is a phenomenal output for a midfielder, and without him in the side, there can be no doubt Dean Smith’s squad would be languishing in the bottom three.

Grealish has shown incredible maturity – something which had previously been questioned after multiple off-field incidents – to lead Villa’s promotion and subsequent survival charges. The 24-year-old has comfortably shouldered the weight of an entire clubs’ expectations at times, especially since a pair of season-ending injuries threatened to derail their first campaign back in the top-flight. It is high praise that both Guardiola and Bruce consider him to be the best player in the Premier League at the moment, but his performances have vindicated their kind words.
