Former Wolves winger lavishes praise on £18m-rated revelation

Wolverhampton Wanderers are enjoying an outstanding season, with Nuno Espirito Santo’s side sitting sixth in the league table, behind Manchester United in fifth by goal difference alone, and also having progressed through to the last 16 in the Europa League. Despite their exploits in Europe, the Midlands side are on course to finish on the same number of points as last season, 57, but one place higher.

One of Wolves’ standout performers this season has been Matt Doherty, and former Wolves defender and Republic of Ireland international Stephen Hunt, who scored six Premier League goals for the club, has lavished him with praise and suggested he could move on.

What did he say?

Speaking to Off The Ball about the fellow Irishman, Hunt said: “What he has done this year is enable himself to go on another level and get to that next level. So not just the one seasons wonder he had, he’s now looking at setting goals of trying to get Wolves in the Champions League and then trying to get Ireland in the Euros.

“Then you are looking at a summer move to a top-four club because he’s certainly playing that well. If he gets the move, obviously Wolves will determine where he goes, but he’s certainly good enough now to play in Spurs, to play in an Arsenal team,” added the former Premier League defender.

Doherty firing Wolves to success

Wolverhampton Wanderers have been outperforming expectations this season and quashing the myth that teams cannot perform in the Europa League and the Premier League. Doherty has been a vital member of Santo’s squad, starting 30 games in the top-flight and Europa League this season, along with being Wolves’ fifth-highest average rated player on 6.97, as per WhoScored. The defender has also found his shooting boots in both the Premier League and Europe, scoring six goals across the two competitions this term, vastly exceeding the output of his fellow defenders, via WhoScored.

Doherty, valued at £18m (Transfermarkt), has failed to replicate his assist output from last term where he created five goals, in the Premier League, he has just one so far. Nevertheless, his influence on the pitch for Wolves cannot be understated, and he has developed into one of the best right-backs in the division as alluded to by Hunt.
