FPL: Five of the best captaincy options for GW13

Josh (@whatthebiggsee) takes us through five captaincy choices for game week 13, hopefully, these may benefit you.

The Obvious One

Sergio Aguero vs West Ham (A)

Believe it or not, I actually struggled to decide on an obvious captain choice for this week. Normally, a home game is preferable. This week we are veering off a bit with Aguero, whose Manchester City have to travel to West Ham. Although not an exciting pick, he is tried and tested, consistently picking up attacking returns.

Having only scored one goal away and seven at home, he is maybe not as enticing an option whilst playing away. His xG is also down per away game at 0.3 rather than his home games 0.8. Despite this, I still believe that he is a great option for captaincy this week. We are ultimately talking about Sergio Aguero, and I think he always has it in him to score a hat-trick.

Manchester City haven’t been as good away from home as they have been at the Etihad, but still definitely have it in them to comfortably beat teams. West Ham are no exception and can still be hammered by Manchester City’s free-flowing attacking football. Maybe not as clean cut a choice as other weeks, but I still think that Aguero holds a good chance of providing for you this weekend.

The Fun One

Richarlison vs Cardiff (H)

The young Brazilian that Everton paid a hefty price for in the summer has had a strong start. Being sent off for head butting someone was bit of a let-down, but other than that he has looked good value for money with six league goals to his name. He is also playing as a striker now which is always attractive from a fantasy football standpoint.

A home game against Cardiff gives any team the opportunity to boost their numbers and Everton are no different. Most will expect goals and Richarlison seems to be involved with a lot of their play so hopefully can grab a goal or two. Maybe not the most guaranteed captaincy but definitely a fun one to look out for.

The Decent One

Martial vs Crystal Palace (H)

Martial suffers from what I will call Uniteditus. He has been playing well so has form on his side. His underlying numbers aren’t fantastic but when he’s scoring six goals in his last five Premier League games, who cares?

The only issue I have with him is that he, as I mentioned earlier, plays for Manchester United. This means either we get the United team that just don’t do anything, or Mourinho drops him for nothing. It’s tough to predict what exactly will happen. This is why he falls into the ‘decent’ category. A home game against Crystal Palace is a good place to keep his form going, with the Eagles currently sat in 16th place. And out of everyone in the United team, Martial seems the most reliable of late.

The Unlikely One

Raul Jimenez vs Huddersfield (H)

I like Jimenez. He has been in my team since week one, survived my wildcard and is still trickling points my way. He is not the most dynamic point scoring player; mostly an assist here or there and the occasional goal. The lack of big scoring days is why the home game against Huddersfield only gets him a spot at unlikely. There is always the hope he can emulate his Gameweek 11 haul vs Tottenham of 12 points but most likely he will get half that. If you have him, you’re probably not going to pick him as captain, but the option is definitely there.

The Differential One

Charlie Austin vs Fulham (A)

This pick is based entirely on passion. No, I don’t fancy Charlie Austin, much, but his comments after the Watford game, yeah the Parklife ones, showed that he really cares about his team and winning. That sort of mentality has the potential to boost the team’s spirits and potentially his own goalscoring form which has been somewhat lacking of late. The away game against Fulham could be the thing he needs to grab his first goal of the season and potentially bring in the form everyone seems to expect of Austin. And if it means we get to see him in more post-match interviews I certainly won’t complain. He is currently selected by just 0.4% of FPL managers. So if you’re one of those or just fancy a crazy punt, any points would make you look like a certified FPL genius.

Good luck to all this week, as always I hope this helped settle any potential captaincy debates you had. Have a great Gameweek 13!
