Josh (@whatthebiggsee on Twitter) takes us through five of the best captaincy options for GW5 in FPL.
The Obvious Choice
Sergio Aguero vs Fulham (H)
The Argentinian superstar plays against a Fulham team that have conceded nine goals so far, that’s second overall, meanwhile City have scored the most of any team with 11. It seems obvious that City will manage goals against a team that likes to attack, and when City score goals Aguero is certain to be involved.
Another reason to captain Aguero is his higher that 50% ownership. That’s a lot of managers who will likely look to captain him hoping for a repeat of his gameweek two heroics.
Aguero is most likely to be my captain and he should probably be yours too.
The Fun Choice
Marcos Alonso vs Cardiff (H)
Cardiff are not the most prolific goalscoring team so far this season. They have had 50 attempts with eight on target and only two goals; so why not captain Marcos “I love to attack” Alonso.
The Spaniard leads the rankings for shots from defenders with 12 and plays in a solid Chelsea backline, meaning a clean sheet is likely to be on the cards; not to mention that he keeps winning penalties. While some say his numbers aren’t sustainable why not have some fun and let him lead your fantasy team to glory?
The Decent One
Mohamed Salah vs Tottenham (A)
It seems silly to describe Salah as only a decent pick. The Liverpool man was considered at the start of the season to be a probable set and forget captaincy choice. He hasn’t however been as dynamic this season as many would have hoped.
He does, however, top the xG charts with 2.84, touches in the penalty area with 34 and is joint top for chances created with 13 (tied with David Silva) leading many to believe he is perhaps going to start getting those big points totals.
He also managed three goals against Tottenham during the 17/18 campaign so has history on his side, as well as his over 50% ownership meaning many will benefit from any points scored. Maybe not as much of a sure thing as other options but definitely a good shout if you’ve not got Aguero.
The Unlikely One
Callum Wilson vs Leicester (H)
Callum Wilson is a player who is maybe not very good? Or is good? Honestly, I don’t know.
The Englishman has so far managed two goals and three assists which are very respectable numbers for a 6.2m player. He is joint second for touches in the box (tied with Aguero), joint 4th highest for shots with 14 (tied with Ings and Schurrle) and has created four chances.
He’s not the communities favourite player but form is on his side. Leicester haven’t been a total flop defensively only conceding five goals so far, but Bournemouth like to attack and hopefully he can sneak some points in there.
As stated an unlikely option but one who could rack up a relatively high score if provided with strong service from the likes of David Brooks and Ryan Fraser.
The Differential One
Raul Jimenez vs Burnley (H)
Jimenez is only owned by 5% of FPL managers; not surprising as he’s only managed one goal in four games. Wolves have been slightly lacklustre they’ve managed 48 shots with 11 coming from Jimenez. Burnley, however, have not been at their defensive best and have conceded the most shots with 73 and joint second most goals conceded with nine (tied with Fulham). If ever there was a time for Wolves to start scoring goals, it’d be this game.
Jimenez being Wolves main striker means hopefully he can get in and around the goals. A haul from him could boost you up the rankings hugely due to his low ownership. Perhaps a step too far in terms of risk but definitely a possibility.
So those are my options, hopefully if you consider any of these players you get rewarded. Thanks for reading and good luck in Gameweek 5!
