FPL: Gameweek 6 Captaincy Conundrum.

In a break from the normal format – and to prevent this feature becoming stale – there will be a change of tack in this week’s Captaincy article.

I think by now we are all aware that the popular choice for the armband will be the usual suspects.  What I shall do this week is to give you an option from each team, with a short statement as to the reason why they should be considered.

West Ham v Spurs

Michail Antonio (WHU) – £7.5m:  Owned by only 0.7% of FPL managers so far, this will start to increase once he starts producing regularly. Has scored twice against Spurs during his West Ham career to date.

Christian Eriksen (TOT) – £9.7m:  Although he has never scored vs West Ham, he has assisted twice during his time with Spurs. Half of these have come during the away fixture and with Harry Kane still sputtering, the Dane could be the safer bet for the armband this weekend.

Burnley v Huddersfield

Ben Mee (BUR) – £4.5m:  A Burnley defender could be a very good choice for a differential Captain in Gameweek 6 and Mee has also been demonstrating some attacking intent recently so could grab a goal from a set piece.  This fixture has Burnley home win shut-out written all over it for me.

Aaron Mooy (HUD) – £5.7m:  With a goal and an assist under his belt already, Mooy is pulling all of the strings in the Terriers midfield.  He is developing into a decent FPL asset and a good enabler if you are going for the Power Front 3 of Aguero, Lukaku and Kane.

Everton v Bournemouth

Gylfi Sigurdsson (EVE) – £8.3m:  Available now for only £8.3m after two price drops, Sigurdsson could be a great pick-up if you are on an Active Wildcard, and a fantastic differential Captain option.  He has taken over from Leighton Baines on most set-pieces which adds to his attraction.

Josh King (BOU) – £7.3m:  Like Siggy, The King has also suffered two price drops, but after the only goal in the League Cup game against Brighton on Tuesday evening his confidence will be high.  Although the tie went to extra-time, King only came on as a 79th minute sub so he won’t be fatigued. He has 2 goals and 2 assists vs Everton already in his 3 Premier League appearances against them.

Man City v Crystal Palace

Gabriel Jesus (MCY) – £10.5m:  The legacy stats may favour Aguero (2 goals and 1 assist) against Palace, or even De Bruyne (1 goal and 4 assists), but for me the smart money could be on captaining Jesus this weekend.  He only has 1 substitute appearance under his belt against the Eagles, but he did register an assist last season.

Christian Benteke (CRY) – £7.7m:  3.8% of FPL managers are still holding the Belgian, despite 0 goals and 0 assists for him (or Palace) in the League so far this season.  Assuming that they’re not all “ghostship” teams, if you’re one of those still keeping faith with Bentekkers then you’re probably not doing very well yourself this season, so why not risk the armband on him away at City? Or not.

Southampton v Man Utd

Fraser Forster (SOU) – £5.0m:  With Utd being so tight at the back this season, and with Southampton hardly being full of goals, I think the best that Saints fans can hope for this weekend is a 0-0 draw.  With that in mind, of the 8.2% of FPL managers who own Forster some might be crazy enough to throw the armband on the stopper.

David De Gea (MUN) – £5.5m: Well, I bet you weren’t expecting this pick were you? My logic is the same as above.  I don’t see this being a goal fest and I think Saints may be disciplined enough to sneak a goalless saw out of this.  Most managers will be throwing the armband on Lukaku as usual, but I’m betting De Gea will outscore him, and 35.3% of you own the Spaniard.

Stoke v Chelsea

Jese Rodriguez Ruiz (STO) – £6.0m:  I’m a believer that Mark Hughes can only get 1 decent game in every 5 from his recruits, and by applying this logic it is Jese’s turn again this week.  He scored in Gameweek 1 at home to Arsenal, so I think he could repeat the feat here at home to Chelsea.

Alvaro Morata (CHE) – £10.2m:  3 goals and 2 assists already this season imply Morata has already found his feet in the cut and thrust of the Premier League and 17.6% of you have faith in him continuing to deliver.  Stoke shouldn’t be too much of a challenge for him if he is as good as some of you believe him to be.

Swansea v Watford

Tammy Abraham (SWA) – £5.5m:  With Bony preferred in the midweek League Cup game, it seems manager Paul Clement still prefers Abraham to lead the line.  A depleted Watford defence got hit for 6 at home to Man City in Gameweek 5 and their chins will be on the floor.  An Abraham Captain could bring in mega-points for some of you if you give him the chance.

Richarlison de Andrade (WAT) – £6.0m:  After an assist and a goal in his first two games, Richarlison has gone off the boil somewhat, but he is still playing in an advanced role.  Swansea did well to shut out Spurs at Wembley, but if it is true every team is treating those ties like a Cup Final, Swansea could be suffering from those hangover blues we see often from Cup Finalists. If that makes sense?

Leicester v Liverpool

Riyad Mahrez (LEI) – £8.5m:  He still boasts an ownership percentage of over 5%, but despite getting off to a good start with 3 assists in his first 2 games, he has dipped off in recent weeks.  That said, the Liverpool defence are brittle and between him, Albrighton and Vardy, Leicester have one of the fastest attacks going which could expose Liverpool.

Mohamed Salah (LIV) – £9.2m:  He may be wasteful, but if you don’t take the shots, you won’t score goals.  3 goals and 2 assists puts him right near the top of the form midfielders and I see him getting chances against the Foxes.  He only needs to convert one to make him a decent choice for your Captain in Gameweek 6.

Brighton v Newcastle

Anthony Knockaert (BRI) – £5.9m:  I know, I know…in every article I keep saying this guy will start scoring FPL points and he is making me look a fool.  But I’m here to be shot at so I’m going to tip him for the armband in this game.  He hasn’t previously scored or assisted against Newcastle in his 4 previous appearances.

Matt Ritchie (NEW) – £6.0m:  Matching Knockaert in terms of FPL price, Ritchie is in a different league when it comes to FPL points.  4 assists in his last 3 games implies that most of Newcastle’s play is going through him and a hat-trick of wins has propelled them up the League.  He could be a very canny pick for the Captaincy from amongst his 4.5% of owners.

Arsenal v West Brom

Alexis Sanchez (ARS) – £11.9:  A can almost guarantee he will start on Monday evening, and he will see no better stage to announce his return as the Star Man in an Arsenal team he was so desperate to leave in the summer.  2.4% of you have already put your faith in him.  If you’ve spent nearly £12m on him, then it makes sense to give him the armband this week too.  He has previously scored 3 goals against the Baggies in his 6 appearances to date.

Ben Foster (WBA) – £4.5m:  Tipping a keeper as Captain away at Arsenal?  Am I nuts?  Probably.  Look, what’s the worst that could happen?  Best case Albion grab a lucky clean sheet and Foster saves a Pen.  Worst case, he racks up a shedload of save points.  It really depends on what Arsenal team show up on Monday night.

There we have it then.  A Captaincy option from each and every team.  My personal selection in the form of a Top 5 from those identified would be (in reverse order):

5. Sigurdsson

4. Eriksen

3. Salah

2. Morata

1. Jesus

Good luck to you all.
