Jamie Carragher takes fire at Liverpool man who is “making the same mistake”

Liverpool may be the runaway Premier League leaders, but that has not stopped former Reds defender Jamie Carragher from taking fire at one of the current squad members. Jurgen Klopp’s side went crashing out of the Champions League and FA Cup in just eight days as their chance of a potential treble was dashed. The result means that the Reds have lost four of their last six matches, and they will have to be satisfied with just competing for the league title.

What did he say?

Speaking on the Maych x Pajak Podcast, Carragher said: “I’ve watched [Dejan] Lovren in a Liverpool shirt for so long making the same mistake. He wants to fight everyone he plays against.”

The former Liverpool captain added: “Harry Kane started this season and stands on Lovren, just uses his body and knocks him out the way. He’s 28, he should have learnt by now.”

Changing of the guard

So far this season Lovren has made just nine Premier League starts, with only Joel Matip having appeared on fewer occasions in the top-flight this term of all the Reds’ central defenders, eight. The Cameroonian defender missed 20 matches with a knee injury though, which is a large part of the reason he has featured so infrequently. This term is the fewest number of appearances that Lovren has made in the Premier League since joining the Reds, having more than halved his starts last term from 24 to 11, as per WhoScored.

Since arriving in the Premier League to join Southampton, the Croat has been particularly error-prone, committing six mistakes leading to goals. His caricature image was not helped when he described himself as “one of the best defenders in the world” (BeIN Sports, via Sky Sports) and he has continually featured less frequently in the top-flight since making those comments in 2018.

It appears that Klopp has decided the future of the Reds backline is Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk, who have been the most common pairing this term, featuring 19 and 29 times respectively in the Premier League. Carragher, hopefully, should not be subjected to witnessing Lovren making the same mistake repeatedly in the top-flight for much longer should Liverpool’s German coach persist in his preferred central defensive partnership, banishing Lovren from the first-team picture in the process.
