Jose Mourinho can put a stop to Liverpool’s invincible season and here’s how – opinion

With some devastating results rather tainting Tottenham‘s festive period, Spurs have their work cut out for them in their upcoming matches in January and February.

Mourinho’s shaky defence have kept just one clean sheet since the Portuguese manager took over so unless drastic changes are made, Spurs will have to rely on pure attacking spirit to get them through the next period of matches.

One of the most notable upcoming fixtures is a matchup with fellow Champions League finalists Liverpool, who currently hold a record of nineteen wins and one draw from twenty games in the Premier League. Premier League teams have a much-needed break from the midweek fixtures with the FA Cup third round on the weekend, but Spurs will no doubt already be planning for their next league game against the Reds.

Mourinho needs to employ some distinct tactical genius if he is to do what other teams have failed to do thus far this season. With Virgil van Djik a metaphorical rock in the Liverpool central defence, Mourinho will need to put extra emphasis on the wide players like Son and Lucas.

Son will be back from his three-game suspension when the Lilywhites host Liverpool and you get the impression the South Korean will be instrumental if they are to get anything out of this match.

The Tottenham defence, especially the wing-backs, may want to hold off on their press and invite Liverpool up the pitch. Trent Alexander-Arnold, as we all know, likes to occupy the final third more than his defensive position. Therefore, whoever is chosen to be Spurs’ left-back on the day could do with detaining their desire to progress up the pitch, luring out Trent and hopefully allowing Son to exploit the space without van Dijk or others covering.

With Spurs’ form under Mourinho currently under scrutiny, there’s almost no chance of a clean sheet being kept at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Mourinho’s men could probably do with taking Liverpool by surprise and clinching at least one early goal, which is obviously much easier said than done. Some huge performances are required by the Tottenham team if this is to happen.
