Jose Mourinho’s criticism of his former club is completely misplaced – opinion

Jose Mourinho caused controversy this week when the Tottenham Hotspur boss blamed Inter Milan for the timing of their move for Christian Eriksen. The wantaway Spurs star has been one of the transfer sagas of the year and has moved to Italy this month for a fractional £16.9m of his £81m valuation, as his contract was due to expire at the end of the season.

Mourinho said: “Tottenham is the last one to blame for this situation” and that “to be on 25 January in a situation like this is not nice.” While the Spurs boss maybe less than thrilled at the prospect of the saga continuing, he is entirely wrong to blame the Italian club alone.

For starters, had the North London club offered their star asset a more competitive deal to stay at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, he may have been enticed to sign on the dotted line. It is well reported that Spurs have a strict wage structure which has led to many of their prized assets earning less than they would have done if they were to line up for other sides of equal stature. If that was the case, the Dane might not have been waiting to see out his current deal with the prospect of leaving as a free agent.

Furthermore, Eriksen was reportedly held up on making his move this month because of Daniel Levy’s notoriously hard stance when it comes to negotiating. The Tottenham Hotspur owner was playing hardball on the price of £17m even though he knew the playmaker could have left for nothing in six months’ time.

Another reason Mourinho was wrong to speak out on the potential move is that he has not been at the helm of the club since the speculation on Eriksen’s future began. Therefore it is possible the Portuguese boss does not know all the details of the situation, stemming back to its origin. Additionally, the Spurs manager said the player had been “behaving in a very, very professional way, with me and the team.” Mourinho’s comments suggest that by speaking out, he is creating more of an issue than Spurs had with Eriksen behind the scenes.

Once again Mourinho may be attempting to mask a string of mediocre results with an outlandish and distracting comment. Fortunately, Inter made the deal happen this month and Spurs were the only club to blame and it is yet another example of the difficulty clubs face dealing with Tottenham in the transfer market.
