Leicester City 2-0 Watford | Talking Points

Hayden Mullins took interim charge as Watford limped to a 2-0 defeat away at the King Power Stadium as the Foxes remain in second place in the league.

A returning Troy Deeney failed to boost a Watford side who sit rock bottom of the table, and from minute 1-90, Leicester were able to control the game, complimenting their brilliant start to the season.

The spirit exhibited from the Foxes after their late win against Everton last week was highly appreciated by their fans, with their players to looking desperate to win and drive themselves up the table. On the contrary, Watford players simply seemed short of any confidence, particularly in the attacking third, with only Sarr making any sort of impact going forward.

The first half was an edgy affair, with Watford desperate not to concede early, and Harvey Barnes came the closest, only to be denied by a stubborn Ben Foster. Jamie Vardy was denied a penalty after VAR confirmed the Englishman dived, however, he was able to rectify this when Adam Masina gave away a penalty early in the second half.

Vardy left Foster rooted and slotted it home to put Leicester on course for their seventh win in a row. There was no response from Watford though and Leicester were comfortable for the entire game – with Watford’s only and first shot on target coming in the 92nd minute which pretty much sums up the situation at Vicarage Road at the moment.

James Maddison managed to seal the three points right at the death to confirm Leicester City are well and truly in the top-four race or even the title-race; with the look on Brendan Rodgers face at full time mirroring these thoughts.

Overall, it was a poor attacking display from Watford who remain in the relegation zone, as Leicester continue to impress everyone in the league once again.

Leicester showing their credentials

A sign of a great team is winning even when you don’t play too well, and the way Leicester managed to remain in control despite not being at the best reflects their true potential to make a large impact on the league.

Without Ben Chilwell, Leicester lacked width on the left but the drive and determination in the team made up for it, allowing the Foxes to pick up the three points and flex their Premier League muscles.

Leicester could be in the title race, but for certain, there is a great chance they will finish in the top four.

Are Watford down and out already?

One shot on target, which was in the 92nd minute, hints towards a sense of defeat throughout the Watford side. It seems as if they have given up any hope that they can survive or let alone win games.

Whoever the new Watford manager is will have a massive task on their hands to turn their season around, and they will have to do it sooner rather than later.

VAR-more controversy

A message from Watford’s twitter at full time pretty much summed up manga thoughts about the game: “so near yet so VAR”.

Jamie Vardy’s penalty was highly controversial after Masina left an arm out, but the way the rules don’t outline fully what happens if the situation is accidental outlines VAR still has a long way to go until it is fully working to speed.

Man of the match- Harvey Barnes

The youngster was a thorn in Watford’s side and despite not getting a goal or assist, his contribution was significant.
