Ligue 1 leading attacker to the Emirates?

Arsenal have emerged as front-runners to sign Lille’s hotshot Nicolas Pepe in January, according to The Daily Star.

The 6ft Ivorian winger is currently firing on all cylinders in Ligue 1 with 12 goals and 5 assists in 18 appearances and this appears to have caught the attention of the Arsenal scouts.

Lille were supposedly unwilling to let the player leave earlier in the season, but the Daily Star now reports that the French club are now more inclined to listen to offers for the 23-year-old of around £45m.

This would seem to be a stumbling block for the Gunners given the fact that Pepe would not necessarily be an immediate first-team starter with Arsenal’s frontline performing quite well.

However, there is certainly an extra attraction to Nicolas Pepe in the fact that he scores goals and is willing to dribble past players, something which Arsenal lack in their wingers.

Iwobi, Mkhitaryan and Ozil all provide creativity but none of them have a strong and consistent ability to go past players. Pepe would then add a new dimension to Emery’s attack.

On top of that, there have been reports that Danny Welbeck, who is injured for the foreseeable future, has made his last appearance for the Gunners and so the acquisition of the Lille winger would be a like-for-like replacement.

The January transfer window now opens in under two weeks and Arsenal fans will be waiting in anticipation to see how their new-look side approaches the window. Will Pepe be the first addition?
