Jurgen Klopp has allayed injury concerns over star defender Virgil Van Dijk after the Dutchman picked up an injury in Liverpool’s 2-1 victory over Spurs on Sunday.
The defender collided with Moussa Sissoko in the dying embers of the game and there were initial concerns over his fitness as Liverpool approach a crucial period in their pursuit of a maiden Premier League title.
Van Dijk has been a star performer for the Reds in the current campaign, bolstering their defence since his £75m arrival from Southampton and giving ballast to their quest for domestic and European glory, but as the Dutchman prepares for the game against his former side, Klopp has played down fears of a long-term absence for their key man.
When quizzed regarding Van Dijk’s injury during his post-match press conference, Klopp replied: “We have to see”.
“I asked him and I think it was in the counter-attack situation when Sissoko hit him… I don’t know if he twisted it or it is a knock”.
“He was walking to the interviews with a big ice pack. I hope it’s nothing serious but I don’t know yet.”
Should Van Dijk be uninjured and available for the remainder of the season, it will signal a huge boost to Liverpool’s Premier League and Champions League prospects, with Joe Gomez, Liverpool’s other first-choice centre-half, remaining on the sidelines with an injury picked up earlier in the campaign.
