Liverpool joining Aston Villa in chasing relegated Premier League keeper

The newly-crowned Champions of Europe Liverpool have joined the race to sign Cardiff City keeper Neil Etheridge, according to reports from Wales Online.

Etheridge, 29, played a crucial role in Cardiff’s battling efforts to remain in the Premier League, despite Neil Warnock’s side falling fractionally short.

The Filipino keeper has made 62 appearances for his country, and after a series of stellar performances in the 2018/19 campaign, a number of top-flight clubs are reported to be interested in acquiring Etheridge’s services.

Liverpool’s interest follows reports of Aston Villa having an £8m offer rejected for the 29-year-old, as Dean Smith’s side look to consolidate on their promotion and re-establish Villa as a stable Premier League side after a three-year absence in the Championship.

Cardiff’s relegation from the top flight is likely to force the hand of owner Vincent Tan, as the Bluebirds seek to utilise alternative revenue streams in the absence of considerable TV rights deals.

The sale of Etheridge for a fee in excess of £10m with two Premier League sides chasing is likely to form a core part of this much-needed income.

A move for Etheridge from Liverpool and Klopp would represent the keeper playing number two to Alisson, who has shone between the sticks since arriving from Roma, so it is likely the decision between Merseyside and B6 will be determined by the player’s desire for first-team minutes weighed up against the lure of a huge Premier League team fresh from winning Europe’s premier club competition.
