Manchester United’s wantaway star targeted by PSG

Manchester United’s David de Gea is being targeted by Paris Saint Germain in a move to replace the outgoing Gianluigi Buffon, according to reports from The Times.

Buffon, 41, was involved in a number of high-profile errors for PSG during the 2018/19 campaign, resulting in the 179-cap Italian international starting just 17 Ligue 1 matches, with Alphonse Areola, a PSG academy graduate, starting the remainder.

This has led Qatar Sports Investments (QSI) to consider pursuing alternative goalkeeping options, and a move for De Gea, 28, is seen to be the logical step in shoring up PSG’s defensive issues in goal.

De Gea has been at the centre of a considerable contract saga at Old Trafford, with the Spaniard demanding a weekly salary matching that of top-earner Alexis Sanchez; £350,000 a week.

The Athletico Madrid youth-product has, like Buffon, attracted criticism for his performances in the current campaign, with notable mistakes against Barcelona in the Champions League crushing United’s chances of progressing to the semi-finals.

With just one year remaining on his current contract, the United hierarchy have desperately been trying to tie down De Gea on new, improved terms at Old Trafford, but the wage demands of both the player and his representatives have driven the contractual dispute to an impasse, despite 20 months of negotiations.

If PSG are to attract De Gea to Paris, they are likely to offer an improved weekly wage in the realms of the £350,000 a week that the Spaniard is demanding at Old Trafford, but with the freeing up of Buffon’s wages alongside a renewed desire to compete in the Champions League, QSI may opt to make De Gea one of their top earners in pursuit of their much-desired place amongst Europe’s elite.
