Marco Silva and Watford rise to the task

Southampton towards the end of last season struggled to put the ball in the back of the net, especially at their home stadium.

Things seemed to be heading in the same direction this season after their opening game against Swansea at St Mary’s. However after a solid performance resulting in a 3 – 2 win against West Ham things seemed to be getting better. After watching this game you may realise the only reason the Saints could score against West Ham was due to West Ham’s Woeful defending.

Watford on the other hand seem a force to be reckoned with. They stifled the Saints in the midfield and piled on the pressure whilst remaining solid at the back.

After a dull 37 minutes of both teams negating each other’s ability to create the more confident Watford went 2 – 0 up after a fantastic hit from Doucoure, 20 yards out. Forster saw the ball late due too the multiple Saints defenders behind the ball and in it went.

After creating next to no chances in the first half, new Saints Manager Mauricio Pellegrino brought Tadic on during half time to add a little more flair to the home side. This did not work and disputes gaining control of the game and despite some half chances lead by Saints left back Ryan Bertrand they could not get a confident grip on the game.

Watford subdued Southampton this half and displayed the psychological edge that is needed to win muted games such as these. This psychological advantage was epitomised with there second goal in the 67th minuet.

A fantastic strike from Janmaat 30 yards out sealed the points for Watford. The more composed and confident team sealed the points there and then against an un-creative and uninspired home side. 2 – 0 it finished as Watford played the last 23 minutes out with moderate ease and composure.
