Newcastle United ramp up transfer activity

Sky Sports have reported that Fabian Schar has completed a move to Newcastle after they activated his £3 million release clause at Deportivo La Coruna.

The 26-year-old Swiss international defender has signed a three-year deal and will improve options at the back after Chancel Mbemba was sold to FC Porto earlier in the window. Schar made 25 starts in La Liga last season and managed an average of over two tackles per game.

As well as this, Newcastle United have reached a deal with Bundesliga side Mainz for Japanese striker Yoshinori Muto, according to Sky Sports the fee is thought to be in the region of £9.5 million. The 26-year-old is travelling to Newcastle for a medical, subject to being granted a work permit.

The Japan international made 20 appearances in the German top flight last season, scoring eight and assisting two. Muto also featured once for Japan at the 2018 World Cup during their 1-0 defeat to Poland.
