Newcastle United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

K/O: 14.00

Venue: St James’ Park

Referee: Kevin Friend

Newcastle United host Wolverhampton Wonderers as the hosts attempt to drag themselves out of the relegation zone against a rejuvenated Wolves side.

After a torrid start to the season, Nuno Espirito Santo’s side appeared to be suffering from the dreaded Europa League curse; however, in recent weeks they have turned their poor form around to go four games unbeaten.

Two wins and two draws have seen them rise up the table to 13th place on 11 points, and victory away this weekend could see them rise all the way to seventh place.

Though the midweek victory in Bratislava may cause the visitors to require some squad rotation to prevent fatigue on Sunday, and they have an almost full-strength side to select from.

Meanwhile, Newcastle are recovering from their early-season injury crisis and will need to make the most of facing less challenging opposition having played five of the big six in their opening nine fixtures.

From those games, they have taken eight points but sit in the relegation zone on goal difference.

The Magpies could comfortably move above the drop zone with a win, but even a draw may be enough to lift Steve Bruce’s side out of the bottom three.

Crucially for the hosts though they must find the back of the net more consistently as they have scored a joint Premier League low five goals, and no player has scored more than once in the league.

Although breaking the deadlock against Wolves may be easier said than done as both sides play a similar style of counter-attacking football and line up in the same formation which has the possibility to cancel one another out.

Team News

Andy Carroll is approaching full fitness and his threat off the bench may be required in an attempt to decide the game. He has been introduced after half time in Newcastle’s previous few games, but he is yet to score again for the Magpies.

Fabian Schar is carrying a slight knock but is expected to start at the back.

Issac Hayden will definitely be absent after receiving the second red card of his career at Leicester City and he is serving the last game of his three-match ban.

Ryan Bennett is a doubt for the fixture but aside from that Wolves have a full squad, unless they suffer any injuries during their Europa League fixture.

Predicted Starting XIs

Newcastle United (4-3-3): Dubravka; Yedlin, Schar, Lascelles, Clark, Willems; Almiron, S.Longstaff, M.Longstaff, Saint-Maximin; Joelinton

Wolves (3-5-2): Patricio; Doherty, Vallejo, Coady, Boly, Jonny; Dendonker, Moutinho; Traore, Jiminez, Jota

Match Prediction: Newcastle United 0 Wolves 0

Newcastle have struggled to find their shooting boots all season, while Wolves have a tight squad which is likely to be exhausted from their midweek efforts and travels to the Slovakian Capital. Expect this fixture to be tight due to the similarities in style and formation, meaning it may be decided by a single goal if it doesn’t finish a draw.
