Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: United need 15 more points for top four

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was left disappointed after Manchester United’s 2-1 loss against Wolves last night and stated in his post-match interview that his side will need 15 more points from their remaining six games in order to pick up a Champions League spot.

The Red Devils have a weekend off Premier League football this weekend as they welcome Barcelona next Wednesday in the first of their crunch quarter-final Champions League tie. They then face West Ham at home before traveling to Everton and then welcome two of their rivals in Manchester City and Chelsea in the Premier League. Their final two matches are against relegated/relegation candidates in Huddersfield and Cardiff. In the mind of Soljskear, United need to win five of these remaining games in order to get into the top-four.

Although traveling to Goodison Park is no easy fixture, United will take confidence in their fixtures against West Ham, Huddersfield and Cardiff and feel comfortable they can pick up wins. With this in mind, if they win these four games, they will have to beat either of Manchester City or Chelsea for a top-four spot. If asked, most fans would probably rather beat Chelsea as they are in direct competition with the Red Devils for a top-four spot yet with this being said a victory against city rivals, Manchester City, could severely dent their title chances. Yet, this could mean the title going to Merseyside, so I am unsure where United fans will sit on this one.

If United picked up three points at Molineux last night they would find themselves in third before tonight’s fixtures, although they would have played a game more than all their top six rivals apart from Liverpool. However, the defeat leaves them two points off Arsenal in third and level on points with Tottenham in fourth – wins for both Tottenham and Chelsea tonight would leave the Red Devils in sixth and at least two points off their rivals.

‘We should have been three up” said Solskjaer after last nights game. “Could have, maybe should have. And we created our own downfall really. It was a very good performance until they score the second goal” said the Norweigan.

The now permanent United manager stated that following the international break his side needed 18 points from the last eight games, they have three of those with their victory against Watford yet last night will be considered as dropped points and the pressure is now on the red half of Manchester
