Arsenal host Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday afternoon with both teams having a slight bump in the road recently after promising starts.

Arsenal’s long winning run has been halted with two draws in consecutive weeks as first Crystal Palace and then Liverpool held the Gunners to a point.

The Liverpool draw exemplified a new found fighting spirit in Arsenal and a desire to not let a big game slip away from them after conceding a lead. It also showed that in terms of quality, Emery’s new side are still a tad short of the required standard to compete at the very highest level.

Wolves’ early season form had many observers describing them as the best-promoted side ever and there was talk of a push towards seventh and Europa League qualification. Since then, however, defeats to Watford, Brighton and Tottenham have presented a more realistic picture of just how good they are. With Huddersfield and Cardiff to follow after the international break, Wolves’ early season momentum is unlikely to be halted completely but a fourth loss in a row would dampen the spirits.

Arsenal will view a win as vital given the unprecedented competitive nature at the top of the league this season. They follow this match with games against fellow top-six rivals Bournemouth, Tottenham and Manchester United. An intriguing run of fixtures in which Emery will be looking to cement his side in the top-six.

Arsenal will look to Alexandre Lacazette to continue his early season form and for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to continue his flat track bully record against Wolves. The January signing has scored 17 goals in 17 games against clubs outside the top six.

Arsenal were also lifted by Alex Iwobi in the draw against Liverpool with his sparkling cameo. The Nigerian helped create Lacazette’s equaliser and will be pressing for a starting place with the mercurial duo of Ozil and Mkhitaryan under threat.

Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo has made only two changes to his starting eleven all season with Traore, Bonatini, Cavaleiro and Gibbs-White all being rotated. The visitors will look to turn their great ball retention into concerted pressure and chance creation this weekend after pushing Arsenal’s London rivals all the way last time out.

Wolves will only be missing wide player Diego Jota for this fixture, whilst Arsenal’s injury list has decreased with only long-term absentees Koscielny and Elneny definitely being out of this one. Sokratis returned in their Europa League game against Sporting. However, Thursday’s match saw Stephan Lichtsteiner pick up a muscle injury but crueler still was Danny Welbeck’s ankle break which will see him out for the long term. Defenders Mavropanos and Monreal could make a return as Emery juggles Arsenal’s involvement in three cup competitions.

Predicted Starting XI’s

Arsenal (4-2-3-1): Leno; Bellerin, Holding, Mustafi, Kolasinac; Xhaka, Torreira; Ozil, Iwobi, Aubameyang; Lacazette

Wolverhampton (5-2-3): Patricio; Doherty, Coady, Boly, Bennett, Jonny; Neves, Moutinho; Traore, Bonatini, Jimenez

Score Prediction: Arsenal 2 Wolves 0

Arsenal have been in good form this season and despite a recent blip, a point against Liverpool was still a good result. It would be a surprise to see them not win this one and go into the international break with 26 points from a possible 36.
