Sheffield United must avoid leaving £4.5m-rated star hanging before he changes his mind – opinion

Sheffield United are on the cusp of achieving arguably the most monumental feat in the clubs history, as the newly-promoted side could qualify for European competition for the first time in their 130 year history. Currently, Chris Wilders Blades sit sixth in the Premier League, which if Manchester City’s two-year European ban is upheld, would guarantee qualification to the Europa League. Some players have already entered contract negotiations to improve their current deals courtesy of the unexpectedly impressive performances this term, but one player who should not be left hanging is Oliver Norwood.

Wilder revealed he plans to negotiate a new deal with Norwood, who said: “It’s nice that the club want me to stay.” The captain for much of the season added: “It’s a great thing to be part of. Why would I want to go anywhere else?” While he may seem set on staying at Bramall Lane, for the time being, things can change fast, especially if other clubs show interest, and Sheffield ought to move quickly to ensure on of this season’s standout performers does not have his head turned.

Norwood, rated £4.5m (Transkermarkt), may be yet to record an assist this term, but few of the Blades players can rival his passing ability. As per WhoScored, the 28-year-old has recorded 1.4 key passes per game, the second-best of any Sheffield player, along with completing the most average passes, 55.4 with an 80.6 per cent accuracy. He is yet to miss a match in the top-flight this season, making 26 appearances and he has been instrumental to Wilder’s side with regard to retaining possession, of which the Blades have kept the third least, on average 44.3 per cent. Without Norwood’s level head in midfield, Sheffield could have struggled to control the ball enough to have a foothold in games.

Sheffield United have revealed they are in talks with four players regarding extending their stays at Bramall Lane. Still, after his sensational performances this term Norwood may begin to wonder why he is not one of them. As he currently appears so set on continuing to captain the club in Billy Sharp’s absence, they must capitalise on his willingness to remain in Sheffield or risk him changing his mind.
