Six tackles: the Wolves player who kept Leicester at bay – opinion

Wolverhampton Wanderers failed to capitalise on their opportunity to apply pressure to Tottenham Hotspur and Sheffield United when they drew with Leicester City 0-0 on Friday night. However, Wolves did have the better of their opponents for portions of the game, taking on 15 shots, one of which found the back of the net but was disallowed following a VAR review. The main threat from Nuno Espirito Santo’s side was down the left flank where Jonny Otto consistently troubled his opposite number, Ricardo Pereira.

No Wolves player had more touches than the 25-year-old Spaniard’s 65, as he continually made himself available as an outlet on the left channel. Only two of Santo’s players who started the game recorded a greater pass accuracy than Jonny’s 78.3 per cent, Conor Coady with 80.8 per cent and Ruben Neves with 86.1 per cent, from the 25-year-old’s 23 passes. Furthermore, only Joao Moutinho produced more crosses which found teammates, three, than Jonny’s two, from three attempts. The Spaniard also played a fellow Wolves player through on goal with a key pass, but the opportunity was squandered.

In attacking areas, Jonny ultimately failed to test Kasper Schmeichel with either of his two shots, of which only striker Raul Jimenez had more, five. While the left-back showed impressive dribbling abilities, rounding opponents on three occasions, ultimately his efforts further up the pitch failed to materialise into a goal. Additionally, Jonny was twice dispossessed by Leicester City players and made one unsuccessful touch. Still, while his performance had its faults, he was one of Wolves’ most potent attacking options on the night.

However, at the back, Jonny was imperious with regards to tackling, making six, the most of any Wolves player, and he was a significant part of the reason that the hosts kept Leicester City out. Furthermore, he also contributed two interceptions to highlight his ability to read the game and guide his opponents into areas where they concede possession. Alongside the numerous tackles and interceptions, Jonny also contributed two blocked shots to ensure that Rui Patricio kept his sixth clean sheet of the season and Wolves collected a point.
