ANALYSIS: The Crystal Palace managerial hot-seat. Who’s up next?

With Sam Allardyce’s shock resignation at the end of the Premier League season, Crystal Palace are on the hunt for a new manager. 90MAAT reviews the potential candidates and who could be best for the job.

Sean Dyche

Current Burnley boss Sean Dyche is the bookies favourite to succeed Big Sam. Dyche has drawn praise in his time as manager of The Clarets, consistent home form and grinding out results against many of the ‘big’ teams in the Premier League despite having the lowest squad value (estimated at £55.7m) for the 2016-17 season.

Dyche may have been relegated with Burnley in 2015 but never betrayed his footballing philosophy and maintained his small squad composition of primarily British and Irish homegrown players.

Having now been managing Burnley for 5 years, Dyche may feel it is time for a new challenge. The main drawback however is how Palace’s star players, Zaha, Townsend and Benteke, deal with Dyche’s pragmatic; often defensive, approach to tactics and management.

Garry Monk

Since quitting as Leeds boss after narrowly missing out on the play-offs, Garry Monk; the former Swansea City manager, will have been considering where his next move could be.

Monk has Premier League experience, having guided Swansea to a 12th and eighth place finish during his time there. In 2014-15 he also became only the third manager to do the double over Manchester United and Arsenal in the same season.

Steve Parish, the Palace chairman, will surely be interested in Monk but could perhaps be looking for someone with just that little bit more experience to take over the reins at Selhurst Park for now.

Roy Hodgson

It is unknown whether Roy Hodgson has mentally got over the debacle that was England’s performance at Euro 2016. He looked a broken man after his team’s shock exit to Iceland in the round of 16.

Despite not covering himself in glory in his time as England boss (to put it lightly), Hodgson has a wealth of experience when it comes to Premier League football.

His last job in the league was with West Brom but he has also managed Liverpool, Fulham and European giants Inter Milan to name a few – there is no disputing the long-term pedigree Hodgson holds as a managerial option.

Hodgson seems like the manager most similar to Allardyce in the list of potential candidates so Palace may be tempted to bring him in for the sake of continuity. However, at the age of 69 Roy may have decided that his managing days are behind him and the Palace board could perhaps be looking for someone younger with a bit more spark and flair.

90MAAT’s prediction: 5/10

Thomas Tuchel

One of the more surprising names on the list of candidates is Thomas Tuchel, ex Borussia Dortmund manager. Tuchel recently led Dortmund to 3rd place finish in the Bundesliga and victory in the DFB-Pokal (German Cup). However, Tuchel left the club just two days after winning the cup due to his strained relationship with the board.

He is certainly the most exciting prospect for Palace fans but in reality you cannot really see him swapping the yellow wall of the Westfalenstadion for Selhurst Park.

That is not to say that the Palace fans should not be allowed to dream. Tuchel may want a long-term project after his time at Dortmund, and the pull of London can never be discounted.
