This player’s return will be imperative in addressing Spurs’ recent poor form – opinion

Spurs have had difficulty keeping themselves ahead of the opposition in recent matches and part of the reasoning for this is perhaps their occasional ineptitude for finishing off moves with a goal or testing shot.

Heung-min Son’s absence from the team has had an adverse effect on the attacking line, as long balls forward have not been latched on to effectively by the replacement players up top without Son’s diagonal runs to cause problems for the opposition defence.

The South Korean picked up a three-match ban after being sent off for violent conduct against Chelsea’s Antonio Rudiger but will be available again for Spurs’ next Premier League fixture against league leaders Liverpool.

As with any team in the league, Spurs will have to be at their very best to even get a single point from Liverpool, who are currently unbeaten in the league. For this reason, Son’s return to the squad has come at an ideal time for Spurs.

On top of this, Harry Kane is set to be out for a long period with a hamstring injury, so Spurs will need someone to fill the striker’s boots while he is unavailable. Son has taken up this role in the past and the team has performed well without the Englishman at the forefront.

With Kane not available to take down or pass on the long balls from defence, Son playing as a striker may force defenders and midfielders to advance slightly up the pitch in order to thread a pass over the top of the defensive line for Son to chase, instead of looking for a direct pass to a target man.

Son was Tottenham’s player of the 2019/20 season and the 27-year-old still remains one of the most influential players in North London. With Spurs’ top-four hopes currently in the balance thanks to some inconsistent late form, Son may end up being the one to turn Tottenham’s fortunes around.
