To sign Isco, City will need to fend off Serie A and Premier League interest

While Liverpool currently sit top of the Premier League, Manchester City were still tipped to be the favourites to win it come summertime. Despite being favourites they are now seven points behind Liverpool and reports from the Express and AS suggest they want to bolster their already formidable midfield options. In order to do this, reports point towards Real Madrid’s Isco.

Rumours have been ignited thanks to Madrid’s torrid start to the new season without Cristiano Ronaldo. Since Ronaldo and Zidane have both left the Bernabeu, Madrid have seen embarrassing defeats to Barcelona in La Liga (where they conceded five) and CSKA Moscow in the Champions League.

The rumours have been further fuelled by the fact Isco was left out of match day squads for Madrid against Roma and the club world cup final against Al-Ain FC. In fact, under Solari, Isco has only started one match and appeared 18 times in all competitions.

In the Premier League alongside Liverpool, Manchester City have also been dominating and this has all been without key player Kevin De Bruyne who returned two weeks ago. Many doubted City’s need for any more strength in depth with an already very talented and expensive matchday squad. However, upon De Bruyne’s return City have again slipped to a third defeat in the Premier League.

The first came from Chelsea but last weekend City fell short to Crystal Palace at the Etihad, whilst then losing away at Leicester. While fans and pundits alike dismissed the need to invest in the January transfer window, the defeats to Palace and Leicester may be an indication that investment is a necessity to overcome Liverpool for the title.

Isco will no doubt easily adapt to Pep Guardiola’s style of play as Pep spent the majority of his playing and managerial career in La Liga. However, interest in the disgruntled Isco is high among many clubs including Arsenal, Tottenham, Chelsea and Juventus. While the link with Guardiola’s style of play is a strong one, there is no doubt Isco will also be very tempted to reunite with Former Galactico Cristiano Ronaldo.
