Virgil van Dijk set to be crowned PFA Player of the Year

According to reports in the Daily Mail, Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk is set to be crowned the PFA Players Player of the Year.

The six-man shortlist of Sadio Mane, Eden Hazard, Bernardo Silva, Sergio Aguero, Raheem Sterling and van Dijk only seemed to have two possible winners in Sterling and van Dijk, who have both had unbelievable seasons for their respective clubs.

The official announcement of the victor is not due until Thursday but reports suggest the Liverpool centre half has overcome his rival and has received the backing of his fellow professionals after his incredible contributions to Liverpool’s title challenge this campaign.

The defender will be the first defender to win the award since John Terry back in the 2004/05 season and follows on from Liverpool teammate, Mohammed Salah, who picked up the prestigious award last campaign.

A good omen for Liverpool fans is that the year Terry won the award, Chelsea stormed to Premier League success as they won the title by 12 points ahead of London rivals Arsenal.

The Dutchman has made 44 appearances in all competitions for the Reds so far this campaign and his £75million transfer to Liverpool last January continues to look like a bargain for the Reds.

Van Dijk will certainly be glued to his television tonight as Manchester City make the short trip to Old Trafford as they attempt to regain top spot in the Premier League table in what continues to be a nail-biting finale to this season.
