Watford 3 Huddersfield Town 0 | Talking Points

Huddersfield fell short of standards yet again this Saturday as the Hornets put three fantastic goals past the struggling visitors.

The first of the trio was a wonderful darting run from Roberto Pereyra, who seemed to glide past the whole of the Huddersfield defence before coolly finding the back of the net. The second followed soon after. This time it was Gerard Deulofeu who took the spotlight. Similarly, Deulofeu scurried through the dire Huddersfield defence, he shot from an improbable angle and slammed Watford two in front midway through the first half.

Minutes later at the other end, Chris Lowe unleashed a fierce shot from 30 yards and nearly pulled off a very special goal but he was denied by Ben Foster who touched it on to the crossbar. The third of the afternoon fell to Isaac Success. Created by an intelligent free-kick, Kiko Femenia sent the ball back across the six-yard box and Success bundled it in beyond Lossl. A deserved result for the home side.

Watford’s Attacking Weapons

Watford showcased their impressive attacking outlets in a fairly routine win, with Roberto Pereyra proving to be the standout player yet again for the Hornets. He joined the club from Italian giants Juventus at the start of the 2016/17 season and is now beginning to show his full potential. Having scored seven in his previous two seasons, he is now up to five with only ten games played – an impressive start.

Starting alongside him toady was Gerrard Deulofeu. His goal today was his first of the season and having only started three times this season, it seems the Spaniard similarly has more to offer. Troy Deeney was absent again today after missing out with a hamstring injury, but he can provide a further attacking impetus for Javi Gracia’s side when fit. The Englishman has racked up an impressive 28 goals in his three seasons in the Premier League.

Turbulent Terriers

Another loss, and bottom again. Huddersfield’s latest performances have suggested some signs of hope, having put up good battles against both Spurs and Liverpool – they were unlucky not to beat Burnley last week. But again they have fallen short. Their performance didn’t warrant a three-nil loss, much as the stats suggest, but they have serious problems all over the pitch. Attacking wise, they recorded more shots (13) than the Hornets (12), creating some good chancess and even hitting the bar. But this result epitomises the lack of quality in the Town side, and why it is important to strengthen in the transfer window – a big January ahead for Wagner.

Watford’s European Push

This result puts the Hornets in an impressive seventh place, and only one point behind Bournemouth in sixth – following their impressive three-nil win at Craven Cottage this afternoon. Watford have started the season really well: winning six, drawing once and losing three. But in order to maintain their push for European action, they must perform against the big dogs. Having struggled against both Manchester United and Arsenal, Watford face top of the league Liverpool and Manchester City in coming games.

Hope for Huddersfield?

Yes, there is some hope for the Terriers. It comes in the form of some ‘easier’ fixtures. Their next five include, Fulham (H), West Ham (H), Wolves (A), Brighton (H) and Bournemouth (A). Town have lost seven Premier League games so far, and have gained their only points from three draws. David Wagner must motivate his players in order to achieve some success in the coming weeks or they will bear the bigger burden as early relegation candidates.

Wagner and Garcia

Garcia is brains behind the Watford success and seems to be getting the most out of his players this season. It looks as if he has found perfect position for Roberto Pereyra, as the Argentine is truly beginning to flourish under the Portuguese manager. Garcia spoke on Pereyra’s recently inspired performances, “an amazing player but not only attacking well, maybe all of the people can recognise he’s playing well.”  Despite their frustrating form, the Huddersfield boss is ‘backed from top to bottom’ at the Terriers, as he is believed to be the right man for the job, but something will need to change sooner rather than later for bottom of the league Huddersfield Town.
