Wednesday lunchtime transfer news: Kovacic, Grealish, Zouma and more

Mateo Kovacic, the Croatian midfielder, is to have a medical at Chelsea today ahead of his loan move from Real Madrid. This is according to Sky Sports. With Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois leaving for Real Madrid in the coming days, the Blues only sanctioned the deal if they could get Kovacic on loan in return. It is unknown how new Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri will fit him into his midfield, but with flop Tiemoue Bakayoko on his way to AC Milan, Kovacic will certainly be vying for a start spot in Chelsea’s midfield.

Sky sources also state that Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish will not be sold this summer. The exciting English midfielder has been subject to heavy interest from Tottenham Hotspur, who as of yet, have not signed a single player this window. Spurs bid £25 million for Grealish but Villa are digging their heels in and look set to keep their star man as they bid to earn promotion back to the Premier League.

Numerous reports emerging today suggest that Kurt Zouma is on the cusp of joining Everton on loan from Chelsea. The Merseysiders are in the market for a centre-back, and it was thought that deals for Barcelona’s Yerry Mina and Manchester United’s Marcos Rojo were very much on the cards. Whilst both remain on Everton’s radar, the Mirror have stated that Kurt Zouma has now become the frontrunner to sign for the Toffees. The Mirror believes that Everton are “increasingly confident” of securing the services of the French international, who spent last season on loan at Stoke City.

According to the Daily Mail, Watford have bid £10 million for Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse. The 23-year-old midfielder has been at the club since 2003, and has since risen through the ranks at the club’s youth system. The Hornets are keen to add to their midfield before the start of the new season this weekend, and with Ward-Prowse’s exceptional set-piece ability, he would certainly be a great coup for the club.

Burnley have long been eyeing-up their former striker, Jay Rodriguez, that would see the English forward re-join his old club from Championship new boys, West Brom. The Baggies have already rejected two offers from the Lancashire club, and are demanding a deal worth over £20 million. In an interesting twist to the story, after West Brom lost Salomon Rondon on loan to Newcastle United in the last few days, Burnley are themselves offering the Baggies a like-for-like replacement, according to the Mirror. They are now willing to offer Sam Vokes in any potential deal for Rodriguez, in what would likely be a cash-plus-player deal.

With Everton having already signed Richarlison from Watford and with his compatriot Bernard on the way from Shakhtar, the Yannick Bolasie’s exit from the club seems imminent. The Congolese winger has flopped following his £30 million move from Crystal Palace in 2016, with much of his first season disrupted by a serious knee injury. Sky sources believe that Middlesborough is Bolasie’s most likely destination, but he could also return to Palace this window. The speedster is valued at £15 million by Everton.
