At the end of the 2021/22 Premier League season, 90MAAT will officially be taking a break from its journey as a provider of Premier League content after five fantastic years of highs and lows.
The site experienced a period of significant after growing from a solo blog to a team of over 50 contributors who were tied by their desire to build a grassroots journalism project into something more commercially compelling that could, maybe, one day provide employment for members of the team in their pursuit of experience in the industry of football journalism.
In 2019, after two years of exceptional growth, Snack Media acquired a majority stake in the site and, in turn, injected capital that provided full-time and part-time salaries for members of the team with a clear investment plan mapped out. Alas, the timing of the COVID-19 pandemic proved to be fatal, with the postponement of the Premier League and the consequent economic uncertainty that followed meaning that investment was paused, and the site’s momentum and growth significantly stalled in the process.
Following that period, put simply, it has been difficult to re-accelerate that growth with full-time jobs and external commitments for members of the team taking precedence. After five seasons of Premier League coverage, the site will be taking a break as it has currently not proven possible to sustain our output of content and to maintain a sense of growth and progress.
As the founder of the site, I will be forever grateful to our writers, editors and designers for their faith and tireless work, as well as our many commercial partners and of course Snack Media as our majority shareholder for their initial faith in acquiring a stake in the site. We were lucky to have an incredible team working with us throughout, and whilst there may be a future for 90MAAT in the distance, for now we have decided that the best course of action is to hang up our boots.
Once again, to those who supported 90MAAT, we’ll be forever grateful. We gave it our all, but right now, the time is not right for us to pursue this further.
All the best,
Tom Newman
