After 30-year wait, Liverpool must not get greedy and ignore former captain to rejoice in stellar season – opinion

Liverpool lost their first game of the season on Saturday evening, 3-0 to Watford, to dash their dreams of equalling Arsenal’s invincible’s. However, they still have a 22-point lead in the Premier League, and the title could be sewn up with just four more wins, which would be their first in 30 years. It has been a sensational and potentially record-breaking season for Jurgen Klopp’s side, and this one blemish should not alter fans jubilation at ending their drought. However, Champions League winning former Red, Jamie Carragher, made a bold suggestion after the defeat.

What did he say?

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game Carragher said: “I think there’s a bit of a worry – not for the league, the league’s won – it’s actually is the league enough for Liverpool this season?”

“It almost feels when you’ve had a season like that it doesn’t feel enough, you still want one of the cups, whether that be the FA Cup or the Champions League,” added the former Liverpool captain.

Fans must not get greedy

Liverpool supporters must be counting down the days to ending their wait for a first-ever Premier League triumph, but fans cannot allow themselves to get carried away by the strength of Klopp’s side and feel they are entitled to more. The margin of their lead in the top-flight is something to be celebrated, however from the sound of Carragher’s comments it is as though the league is sealed and they are onto the next piece of silverware. This crop of Reds players are already champions of Europe and subsequently the world and their achievements this season are unrivalled by any Liverpool side in the Premier League era.

Even if Liverpool drop out of the Champions League to Atletico Madrid and against Chelsea in the FA Cup, this term will have been a historic one at Anfield, and there are no signs to suggest their dominance will end anytime soon. Klopp recently signed a new deal until 2024, while Pep Guardiola’s future in Manchester is in doubt, which could mean there is plenty of time for the Reds to expand their trophy cabinet in the future. Regardless of how this seasons cup competitions pan out, those performances must not overshadow winning the Premier League.
