Arsenal Transfer History: Records and Statistics

Arsenal Football Club

Nicknames – The Gunners, The Gooners

Best Premier League Finish – 1st (1997/98, 2001/02, 2003/04)

Arsenal currently hold a Premier League record that is extremely sensational and may not be broken for many years to come. In their title winning season (2003/04) they went for the entirety of the season unbeaten, earning them a golden Premier League trophy to commemorate this.

Whilst more modern times have not been so shiny, they are still one of English football’s top 6 and are always a pleasure to watch.

Biggest Flop – Park Chu-Young:

A bizarre signing indeed. At a time when Arsenal fans needed a lift in terms of transfer news, the arrival of Park was less than ideal. The South Korean international signed from recently relegated Monaco with a less than impressive goalscoring record, especially for a club of Arsenal’s calibre. Making very few appearances and scoring only a single goal in his time at Arsenal, fans must have been somewhat relieved when he left the club. At least he didn’t cost too much, he was reported to have cost somewhere in the region of £3-5 million.

Biggest Bargain – Santi Cazorla:

Now this is a bargain. Less than £15 million for what Santi Cazorla did at Arsenal is an absolute steal. There are so many highlights but the top of it must be kickstarting Arsenal’s comeback in the 2014 FA Cup final with his amazing freekick, and I think we all remember that Man City game. Very much a fan’s favourite, not just Arsenal fans, but football in general loved the Spanish Magician. Jamie Redknapp was quoted saying that ‘you couldn’t get the ball off him in a phonebox’. After suffering a horrific Achilles injury that threatened his ability to walk let alone play football, it was a sad time for fans when Cazorla left the club. Many fans reckon that Arsenal would have won the league had it not been for this upsetting event.

Records and Trivia:

  • Arsenal have the 5th highest squad value at £379.83 million
  • They also remain 5th for a club’s most expensive signing
  • Three of Arsenal’s top five signings are the most expensive transfer fees for a player of that nationality. Pierre Emerick Aubameyang is the most expensive Gabonese, Mesut Ozil is the most expensive German and Granit Xhaka is the most expensive Swiss.
