Barcelona star fuels speculation of record-breaking Arsenal transfer

The Telegraph are reporting that Barcelona winger Ousmane Dembele could potentially be on his way to The Emirates in a club-record deal for the North London outfit.

The rumours have emerged following a photo of the Frenchman with Arsenal players Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Alexandre Lacazette and new signing Matteo Guendouzi. The group were pictured enjoying a dinner last evening, fuelling speculation the former Dortmund man is headed to the Gunners.

Dembele has had a turbulent time at the Nou Camp, following his £135m move from Dortmund. He was originally intended to be a replacement for Neymar, but has struggled to fill his boots, only returning four goals in 23 appearances.

Dembele’s domestic form did not deter Deshcamps from including him in his World Cup winning squad, however the winger failed to find the net or register an assist during the tournament. New Arsenal boss Emery has previously declared his interest in signing two new faces before the end of the window, and the 21-year-old winger could be one of his priorities.

Many Gunners fans will be anxious to know whether Dembele will feature in Emery’s new look side, as they look to improve on last season’s campaign.

A move for the Frenchman would inevitably break Arsenal’s transfer record of £55m when they signed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang last January, as Barcelona will be expected to demand a sizeable fee that would recoup the majority of their huge expenditure from signing Dembele last summer.

Many considered the transfer to be an inflated, panic-driven move following the departure of Neymar in a world-record deal to PSG, and therefore it may be appealing for Barcelona to move on their most second most expensive transfer ever behind Philippe Coutinho’s £146m move from Liverpool.

Arsenal kick off their 2018/19 Premier League campaign against Manchester City on Sunday the 12th August, in what promises to be an exciting curtain raiser.
