Burnley post record £36.6m profit

Burnley have posted a £36.6m profit for the year ending June 2018, fuelled by the transfers of Andre Gray and Michael Keane to Watford and Everton respectively.

Gray, 27, was sold to Javi Gracia’s Watford for £18.5m, whilst Keane, 26, joined Everton for a fee of £30m in 2017.

The club have built upon previously strong financial results having recorded a £30.1m profit in June 2015, and despite remaining embroiled in a relegation battle in the Premier League, look likely to retain their status in the top-flight of English football.

Burnley’s increased turnover from £121m to £138.9m played a significant part in their record profits, despite wages increasing from £61m to £81m, following a wider football trend, particularly evidenced in the Premier League.

The Clarets chairman, Mike Garlick, commented on the record profits, stating “We continued to invest in new playing talent whilst trading players where we felt that they might be at, or close to, the peak of their value”.

“As we hopefully continue to maintain our Premier League status going forward, the above will form a key part of our strategy and, in the main, we will purchase players who improve the quality and competitiveness of our first team and are able to technically develop further and grow in value.”

Burnley are next in action when they host Wolves at Turf Moor on Saturday in a crucial encounter for their prospects of Premier League survival.

The Clarets are on a four-game losing streak in the league, but will look to rectify their recent poor form against a high-flying Wolves side who themselves will be looking to continue their quest for Europa League qualification.
