Comments on this £54m-rated maestro epitomises Leicester’s relentless ambition – opinion

Leicester City have been enjoying an outstanding season in the Premier League and Brendan Rodgers has guided his side to third after 28 matches. The Foxes are currently on course to make a Champions League return for the first time in four seasons, and if they were to finish in their current standing, it would be their best top-flight term since winning the league. Though the Foxes are winless in their last four matches, they will attempt to turn recent results around after a disappointing performance away to bottom-of-the-table Norwich on Friday.

James Maddison returned to Carrow Road to face his former club on Friday yet his current side has issued a strong statement to the rest of the division that Maddison will be signing a new deal via manager Brendan Rodgers. The Leicester City manager said: “The boy is very happy; he wants to be here, and he sees this as the club he can develop at. He is on a great learning curve and is a player who wants to get to the very highest level.”

There had been reports than both Manchester United and Arsenal were interested in Maddison, but by revealing they expect the England international to sign a new deal, it appears likely he will remain at the King Power Stadium. Leicester have previously taken a tough stance concerning the sale of Harry Maguire and Riyad Mahrez and given he is rated £54m (Transfermarkt), any potential suitors may have been warned of.

Having scored six and assisted three in 27 Premier League appearances, Maddison has had a significant contribution in Leicester City’s rise to prominence this season, via WhoScored. His manager described him as having made “a rapid rise from League One to the Premier League, and he is constantly developing”.

Leicester City will need players with the kind of attributes Maddison has when they most likely make the transition to European football next season if they are to excel on the continent. Revealing they are likely to keep the 23-year-old at the King Power Stadium is a power play, which shows how the club intends to stay in the position they currently occupy.
