Five key fixtures to watch in September and October

Every week the Premier League presents football fans with fantastic match-ups throughout the division, each game entertaining the fans for different reasons. Sometimes it is the style of the two teams involved that lead to enthralling fixtures, or it’s a derby match that never fails to provide the fans with drama. However, we will also look at fixtures that can catch the eyes of any footballing fan. There are some games that you just cannot miss and the five fixtures mentioned in this article are those that 90MAAT think are a must watch.

Tottenham vs Liverpool – Saturday 15th September

The first fixture to look out for is Liverpool’s visit to London in an attempt to continue their perfect start to the season. Jurgen Klopp’s men head into this game at the top of the Premier League table, but will have to play to the best of their abilities if they are to come away from Wembley with all three points.

The Reds are in fine form, scoring nine and only conceding one goal in four Premier League matches. Klopp will be hoping his side’s form will not be impeded by the international break and that everyone has rested sufficiently. Liverpool’s attack will be key to victory as they will need to counter attack a strong Spurs side. Mauricio Pochettino will be hoping that his players will return in a confident mood after a shock defeat to an in form Watford side before the international break. Despite the loss, the Brazilian winger, Lucas Moura, picked up the Premier League Player of the Month for August and could be pivotal for Spurs if they are to come away from this battle victorious.

This fixture sees two of the best footballing sides in the country clash and will almost certainly deliver as one of the highlight fixtures of the next couple of months.

Fulham vs Watford – Saturday 22nd September

This fixture sees Premier League newcomers, Fulham, take on this season’s surprise high flyers, Watford. Whilst Fulham sit in the bottom half of the table, their new signings Jean Michael Seri and Andre Schürrle have impressed their new supporters. They will also be looking to make Craven Cottage a fortress if they are to avoid a relegation battle this season and their 4-2 victory over Burnley showed that Slavisã Jokanović’s squad are capable of doing so. His side have picked up 4 points in the last 2 games and another home fixture will be a big opportunity to pick up valuable points.

However, Watford are a team in superb form. They are joint top after four games, taking all twelve points. Their victory over Tottenham was one of the surprise results of the season so far and Javi Gracia has got his side playing exciting football. An attack led by captain Troy Deeney has seen nine goals scored for the Hornets so far. Much of their success going forward can be attributed to Roberto Pereyra, who has scored three goals in four games and looks to be one of Watford’s key players if they are to challenge the top six this season.

This fixture has the potential for goals. Watford have scored nine whilst Fulham have bagged seven in their opening four games. With the array of attacking talent on display in this fixture, both teams could score in what has the potential to be a standout game in the fixture list that weekend.

Chelsea vs Liverpool – Saturday 29th September

The end of September sees two of the Premier Leagues best go head-to-head. After a poor season, Maurizio Sarri seems to have rejuvenated Chelsea since the departure of Antonio Conte from Stamford Bridge. The introduction of a new formation looks to have helped his side get to the top end of the table. This fixture falls in the middle of a challenging run of games for Klopps’s men that will test the club’s championship winning capability.

This match-up will be a tense affair that could be settled by a moment of individual brilliance. If this is to be the case, these two sides certainly have the players to produce some magic. It is a must-see game because of the abundance of talent on show. Kante, Hazard, Salah, Mane and Firmino are just a handful of players on the long list that make this game appealing, not just to English football fans, but football fans around the world.

Whichever team comes away with three points will provide them with a boost of confidence heading into October.

Liverpool vs Man City – Sunday 7th October

The is the third time that Liverpool have featured in this list and it marks one of their toughest games of the season. These two sides are amongst the favourites to win the title this season and this is one fixture that fans will not want to miss. Manchester City and Liverpool met on four separate occasions last season, resulting in a total of 17 goals scored. The Reds won three of those games and Klopp was one of the few managers who got the better of Guardiola’s title winning side last season. Two of his victories also ended City’s Champions League hopes, with the Merseysiders progressing after winning 5-1 on aggregate.

Liverpool’s league visit to the Etihad Stadium last year saw them thrashed 5-0 by a ruthless Man City side. However, Liverpool’s side has changed significantly since last September. Virgil Van Dijk’s presence at the heart of the Liverpool defence makes it look unlikely that we will see a repeat of this any time soon.

This fixture sees the two best sides in the league come head-to-head in a growing rivalry based on the quality of both teams and the desire to win the 2018/19 Premier League title. Fans will be sure to see a very high level of football with plenty of goals.

Chelsea vs Manchester United – Saturday 20th October

This fixture is always guaranteed to excite the football world. With a long and competitive rivalry, no matter who is in charge of the two clubs, there is always importance in beating one of your biggest rivals and taking the bragging rights that come with it.

This fixture marks the first time that Sarri and Mourinho will have met in competitive football and whilst this fixture takes place in over a month from now, it is one of the most highly anticipated fixtures in the Premier League calendar. Mourinho’s men have been struggling to find form recently, but they have a month to change their fortunes before they meet a strong, new-look Chelsea side.

The fixture takes place at Stamford Bridge which adds a stylistic aspect to the game. Mourinho teams of the past are known for their strong defensive performances away from home, particularly against big opposition rivals. The Portuguese manager values any point away from home as a good one. However, they will have to be at their resolute best against a team that look ready to challenge for the title this season. United fans will be hoping that a win can help them kick start their title race.

This fixture promises to be one to look out for over the next two months. Whilst there is the rivalry that comes with this fixture, by late October there is a lot in the balance for clubs and a win in this game could give Chelsea or Man United the boost they need going into Winter.
