Fabrizio Romano: Liverpool “well informed” on Gabri Veiga

Italian journalist and transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has delivered a fresh update on Liverpool’s interest in Celta Vigo star Gabri Veiga this summer.

The 21-year-old midfielder has been consistently linked with a move to the red side of Merseyside over the last few weeks as Liverpool plot their midfield rebuild.

Jurgen Klopp and new sporting director Jorg Schmadtke are on a mission to iron out some glaring issues in the centre of the pitch and are looking to identify the next generation of success to bring more trophies to Anfield.

Liverpool have already confirmed the signing of Argentine World Cup winner Alexis Mac Allister to improve the quality in the heart of the team, but it is unlikely that the former Brighton and Hove Albion star can transform the performances by himself.

As a result, the latest news coming from Romano will be warmly welcomed by the Anfield faithful who will be hoping that the club hierarchy will show ambition to get Liverpool back to their winning ways with a strong summer window.

On Sunday, the Milan-based transfer expert claimed on Twitter:

“Liverpool remain well informed on Gabri Veiga situation but NO bid as of now — focus on more physical midfielder at this stage, Thuram & Kone in the list 🚨🔴 #LFC”

“Chelsea called to be informed on Veiga clause conditions earlier this week and will discuss that internally 🔵 #CFC”

Our verdict on Liverpool’s interest in Gabri Veiga…

It is certainly encouraging that the recruitment team are looking at a number of youthful prospects to bolster the depth in midfield.

Kouadio ‘Manu’ Kone and Khephren Thuram are both strongly-linked Liverpool targets this summer and at just 22 years old, would be great acquisitions for the future of the squad.

Veiga is, again, another young exciting player who could have a huge future at Anfield if the Reds can seal a deal this summer.

Over 36 La Liga appearances last season, the Spanish talent scored 11 goals, registered four assists and created six big chances, as well as averaging 1.7 shots on goal, 1.2 tackles and 1.1 successful dribbles per game.

Not only that, Viega ranks in the top 15% of his positional peers in the top five European leagues for non-penalty goals, touches, successful take-ons and progressive carries, further demonstrating his potent attacking attributes.

Whilst the Merseyside giants should be prioritising box-to-box midfielders who possess a strong passing range and high work rate to offer reliability in defensive transition, the signing of Veiga would provide Klopp with a tenacious attacking presence in midfield.

The German coach already boasts young talent who possess great strength in breaking the lines between midfield and attack, with Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones both regular features in the first team.

With that being said, Veiga is showing a lot of potential to be a force to be reckoned with in attack, however, his profile should not be a priority for Klopp this summer and the Liverpool boss should instead be working to secure a deal for midfielders with a more diverse skill set.
