Liverpool line up club-record £85m bid for Barcelona star

Liverpool are considering a club-record £85m bid for Barcelona winger Ousmane Dembele, according to reports in The Sun.

Dembele, who moved to the La Liga outfit from Borrusia Dortmund for £135m in January, has struggled for sustained form and minutes since arriving in Spain, and Jurgen Klopp is reportedly ready to smash the club’s transfer record again, after the £75m signing of Virgil Van Dijk from Southampton.

The Frenchman, 21, would provide competition to Liverpool’s eclectic front-three of Saido Mane, Mo Salah and Roberto Firmino, as Klopp seeks to add quality to his squad with the Reds going in search of their first ever Premier League title.

Dembele has scored six goals and registered two assists this season, a strong return, but question marks continue to linger over his long-term future at the club, and the link to Liverpool is only strengthened after Klopp admitted an interest in Dembele back in May when the Frenchman was resigned to the bench for the El Clasico fixture against Real Madrid.

Any bid from Liverpool would need to break their £75m record outlay, though whether Barcelona would be willing to part ways with such a promising talent at a reported £50m loss remains to be seen.

After the international break, Liverpool travel to Vicarage Road to play Watford in the Premier League whilst Barcelona play away against Athletico Madrid in La Liga.
