Liverpool’s £72m-rated playmaker continues to hunt down a Premier League record

Liverpool have been the runaway Premier League leaders this season and currently have a 24-point lead at the top of the table with just nine matches of the campaign remaining. Jurgen Klopp’s side have slain almost all who have come before them, losing only once to Watford which ended a 44-game unbeaten run in the Premier League and dashed the Reds’ chances of emulating Arsenal’s ‘Invincibles’ squad. One of the key figures within the team has been Andy Robertson and the Scottish international is fast approaching a Premier League record.

So far this season the flying left-back has provided seven assists in the top-flight, level with teammates Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino and behind only Trent Alexander-Arnold’s 12 in the Liverpool squad, as per WhoScored. Overall the 26-year-old has provided 27 assists in the top-flight from defence, and he is fast approaching Leighton Baines’ record for goals provided by a player who has spent their entire career as a defender; 53.

The primary difference between the two players is how rapidly Robertson has reached that mark, in just 143 appearances, recording an assist every 5.3 matches in the Premier League. Meanwhile, the Everton veteran has reached his total at a significantly slower rate, notching an assist every 7.8 games in the top-flight. Based on his current output Robertson is precisely halfway to eclipsing the former Wigan defender’s record and should require another 143 matches to become the most prolific goal creating defender in Premier League history.

Despite his incredible attacking output this term, Robertson has not neglected his defensive duties, providing 1.7 tackles per game for a total of 47, behind only Jordan Henderson’s 55 for the Reds. The Scot has also recorded the second-most interceptions for Liverpool, 32, narrowly eclipsed by his opposite number Alexander-Arnold on 36. Robertson has proven to be an outstanding asset to his side at either end of the field and is incredibly dependable and has not made a single error leading to a goal in his last 119 top-flight appearances.

The 34-cap Scottish captain was picked up for a meagre £8.1m by Liverpool in 2017 and is now valued at £72m (Transfermarkt). Robertson has gone on to lift the Champions League with the Merseyside club and the Premier League title is now in their sights. He has proven to be an incredibly shrewd buy for the Reds and is halfway to hunting down a Premier League record.
