Malta: Premier League Nations

Continuing our alphabetical world tour, next up is Malta. A small island in the Mediterranean Sea, Malta has been an independent country since 1964, having previously been a British colony.

One for the trivia fans out there, there is currently no option to filter for Maltese players on the Premier League’s player stats page, but we believe just one player has represented Malta in the Premier League. remember him?

First (and only) Player – Dylan Kerr (Leeds; 1992-93)

Congratulations if you do, because we don’t. Making just five appearances in defence for Leeds United in 1992/93, we believe Dylan Kerr is the only Maltese to have featured in the Premier League.

Kerr enjoyed a long career in the English and Scottish league pyramids, being on the books of Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds in the 80s and early 90s before moving down the divisions with the likes of Doncaster Rovers, Blackpool and Reading, to name just a few of his clubs.

Records

Elsewhere

Former Southampton midfielder Paul Tisdale was born in Malta but is listed as English on the Premier League website. The highest capped and top scorer of the Malta national team – Michael Mifsud, played English football with Coventry City and Barnsley, but never in the Premier League.

Trivia

  • Malta have only won two World Cup qualifying matches in their history.
  • Dylan Kerr has managed teams in Vietnam, Tanzania, Kenya and South Africa.
